The SS Penguin sank off the coast of Wellington, New Zealand in 1909 after hitting rocks in rough seas. There were 105 passengers and crew onboard. Lifeboats and rafts were launched but capsized in the rough conditions. None of the children aboard survived. Many passengers and crew drowned or died from hypothermia after spending hours drifting in the icy waters before being rescued. The sinking resulted in the deaths of over 30 people, leaving the survivors to mourn the tragic loss of life.
