The narrator describes how as a child they were embarrassed by and resented their mother who had only one eye. The narrator ignored and was rude to their mother at school. As an adult, the narrator was successful but remained distant from their mother. Upon the mother's death, the narrator learns that as a child they had lost an eye in an accident and their mother had given them her own eye so the child could see.
