Saint Valentine's Day is celebrated annually on February 14th. According to legend, Saint Valentine was a priest in Rome in the 3rd century who performed weddings for young lovers despite the Emperor's ban. When this was discovered, Valentine was put to death. Another legend says he sent the first valentine greeting to a girl he fell in love with while imprisoned. By the Middle Ages he had become one of the most popular saints. In Britain, unmarried girls would wake early on Valentine's Day hoping to see their future husband first. The tradition has evolved to involve exchanging gifts, flowers, and cards between loved ones.
