OpenDataWeek Marseille 2013 : Luca Gerretta -- Harmonising open data policies...Fing
The HOMER project aims to harmonize open data policies across 8 European countries in the Mediterranean region. The project involves 7 regional governments and public agencies who will work to aggregate open data initiatives, establish an effective open data strategy, and set up an interoperable digital market. The main deliverables will be reports on open data requirements, licensing, and socioeconomic impact analysis. A key work package will support the development of open data portals, implement pilot projects, and help harmonize technical and legal aspects of open data across partners to make data more accessible and encourage reuse. The project expects to stimulate data reuse and discovery of new applications, enhance economic growth, and increase awareness of open data policies.
Gifts That Give is a social commerce company that allows users to create charitable fundraising campaigns on Facebook. Users can drag and drop up to 60 gift items into a virtual storefront to support their chosen cause. When friends share the campaign, they earn recognition and incentives to drive viral growth. The company aims to leverage social networks to combine shopping, sharing, and giving. It will launch in Spring 2011 and plans to roll out a wide variety of merchandise categories over time. The founders have extensive experience in retail, technology, and investing. Gifts That Give believes its model of viral campaigns through social networks can effectively connect people through shared interests in shopping, friends, and charitable causes.
The document discusses exporting iPods to Argentina. It notes that Argentina has over 40 million citizens under 30 years old and its IT industry and GDP are growing rapidly. However, exporting iPods would face high tariffs of 10-20% and taxes of 37-47%. Setting up a subsidiary in Argentina would give control over operations but open the company to double taxation, while a distributor would lack control. Financing options include U.S. loans and loans from Argentine banks.
Hadley Beeman, chair of the W3C Government Linked Data Working Group, gave a presentation on project HOMER which focuses on harmonizing and linking government data on the web. The presentation covered topics such as the role of governments in publishing data, data discovery tools, linking and modeling data, persistent URIs, data standards used across governments, and taking questions.
