Known as the 'Mezzogiorno', the Italian south is a fascinating mix of Greek, Norman, Arab, French and Spanish influences. With a history significantly different from that of the north, this half of what was once the Kingdom of the two Sicilies has seen greater misery but also periods of extraordinary splendour and cultural ambition which have left abundant traces throughout the regions of Puglia, Basilicata, Campania and Abruzzo.
From the flatlands of Puglia with thousand year old olive trees and magical clusters of the strange conical houses known as 'trulli', through the fascinating area of Matera known as the 'sassi' where the population lived in caves until recent times, then to Paestum and the lovely seaside resort town of Sorrento, visiting, Pompeii and onto the towering mountains of the Abruzzo - perhaps Italy's last frontier with it's inaccessible hilltowns and forests still providing refuge to wolves and bears. You will be constantly reminded that there is no other place that matches the cultural richness of Italy.

Day 15 Wednesday 01 June – Tours – Chartres – Mont St. Michel (B/D)
After breakfast depart Tours via Chartres for Mont Saint Michel. Our journey
takes us on to the great Cathedral city of Chartres where we enter inside the
magnificent 13th century Chartres Cathedral, a medieval architectural wonder
and home to the Holy Veil, said to be worn by the Blessed Virgin Mary when she
gave birth to Jesus. There will be the opportunity to see the most famous
labyrinth in the world, built around the year 1200 and sometimes called the
“Chemin de Jerusalem” or Road of Jerusalem.
Departing Chartres, we continue on to the beautiful island of Mont-Saint-
Michel. According to legend, the archangel Michael appeared to St. Aubert,
Bishop of Avranches, in 709 and instructed him to build a chapel on the rocky
islet. Soon after, he sent a group of monks to live on the island.

Day 16 Thursday 02 June – Mont St. Michel – Full Day Tour (B/D)
This morning we will meet our guide for a tour of the island. A highlight of our visit
here will be the Benedictine Abbey, which during the French Revolution was turned into
a prison. We plan to join the community here for an inspiring chanted Mass. During our
tour we will also see the Chapelle de Notre Dame sous Terre (Underground Chapel of
Our Lady). It was built in the late 10th century in the very place that St Aubert
erected the oratory in the 8th century. An opportunity to discover the 14th century
residence, Tiphanie’s House, that Bertrand Duguesclin had built in 1365 for his wife
Tiphaine (furnitures, paintings, tapestries). Overnight Hotel Mercure (or similar).
6. Day 17 Friday 03 June – Mont St. Michel – Lisieux – Paris (B/D)
After breakfast we travel east to Lisieux, one of the world’s premier pilgrimage
sites and home to St Therese, the ‘Little Flower’, whom Pope Pius X called ‘the
greatest saint of modern times’. On arrival we enjoy a tour of Lisieux visiting
the family home of Les Buissonets, the Carmelite Convent Chapel with its
reliquary of the saint and St Therese’s Basilica. After lunch we depart Lisieux
for Paris stopping at Giverny to visit Monet’s Gardens. There are two parts in
Monet's garden: a flower garden called Clos Normand in front of the house and a
Japanese inspired water garden on the other side of the road. The two parts of
Monet's garden contrast and complement one another. Overnight in Paris Hotel
