The Leadership Program at American University engages students in community projects and leadership development activities. In their first year, students work in issue groups on social issues like human rights, urban development, and the environment. In their second year, students conduct individual social action projects on diverse topics. As juniors, students complete internships while taking a class on organizational leadership. Seniors create conference presentations on leadership theory. Throughout, the program emphasizes hands-on learning, community service, and networking opportunities to prepare students for careers as leaders and change agents.
The use of social media in higher educationanis1064
This dissertation examines the use of social media by administrators and faculty at a large community college system. Through surveys and focus groups, the study explored how social media is being used and some challenges attributed to its use. Key themes that emerged include: 1) personal choice in using social media is becoming less of an option as expectations for its use increase, 2) barriers like lack of time and technical skills inhibit expanded use, 3) social media blurs boundaries between personal and professional lives, and 4) issues like distraction and privacy are ongoing concerns rather than more serious problems highlighted in media. The research found social media use will continue growing and institutions should establish social media strategies to guide appropriate use.
Albert Merono-Penuela: Understanding Change in Versioned Web-Knowledge Organi...COST Action TD1210
This document discusses understanding change in versioned knowledge organization systems (KOS) on the web. It describes work being done in the CEDAR project to harmonize and publish historical Dutch census data as RDF data cubes. The document outlines challenges with concept drift (changes in meaning over time) in dynamic classifications and ontologies used in census data from different time periods. It proposes using machine learning techniques to predict where and when versioned KOS on the web will change based on analyzing patterns of change in past versions. Features related to structural changes and changes in class membership are discussed for use in the machine learning models.
AQUAS - Providing Support for Financially Underprivileged Athletic ScholarsJohn W. Adams
AQUAS is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to identify, sponsor and mentor underprivileged high school scholar-athletes to secure athletic and/or academic scholarships so they can achieve a college education. With the help of private donors, AQUAS, in partnership with College Promoters USA, funds a professional video and marketing effort to showcase our candidate’s athletic capability. The video and an academic/athletic resume are distributed to college coaches throughout the nation. In addition, AQUAS volunteers follow up by phone with the coaches and counselors. AQUAS provides counseling for the students in responding to various college inquiries/offers and in the selection of a good match for them. Since its inception in 2009, AQUAS has helped 30 students receive more than $5,000,000 in scholarship funding – all for just $2,500 per student. That’s right, a donation of just $2,500 per student enables AQUAS to successfully promote an underprivileged athletic student and help them secure scholarships so they can achieve a college education – one they more than likely would not otherwise achieve. 100% of our donations are used directly towards assisting in the scholarship process as AQUAS is run and managed entirely by volunteers.

This document summarizes a study on managing primary school classes. It describes a survey of 65 primary school teachers in Italy on their perceptions of student conduct. The results showed that teachers valued a positive psychological climate in the classroom that facilitates learning through positive social interactions and adherence to educational goals. However, some teachers still preferred repressive discipline approaches. The researchers suggest this may be because teachers need more training on classroom management strategies and because schools are expected to take on a larger role in guiding student behavior where families are unable to. Overall, the study highlights the importance of cooperation between schools and families in managing student conduct.

OUR STORY BEGAN NEARLY
NINE DECADES AGO
When you select a Globus holiday, you’re choosing a company
that has defined the way today’s travellers experience the world. It
all began on a spring day in 1928. While using his family’s rowboat
to transport lumber across beautiful Lake Lugano in Switzerland,
Antonio Mantegazza became inspired to share the stories of his
home with others. He soon began transporting tourists instead…
and Globus was born.
COMMITTED TO OUR PLANET
We’re committed to protecting the places we visit. By employing
environmentally friendly motorcoaches and partnering with
preservation and sustainability initiatives, we’re working to ensure the
world’s icons will be here to thrill travellers for generations to come.
Tourism Cares
For 2017, Globus has targeted several iconic
destinations for preservation/restoration funding,
including the Mountain Institute in Peru.

Arrive in Lima, where you will be met by your Tour Director.
DAY 2 LIMA.
This afternoon, your Local Guide focuses on the city’s colonial heritage
during a walking TOUR. Start at the Plaza de Armas to see the Government
Palace and the cathedral. From here, stroll to the venerable SAN
FRANCISCO MONASTERY with its splendid 17th-century cloister murals. For

Fly to Cusco, the impressive Andean city that was once the capital of
the Inca Empire. Head into the Sacred Valley of the Incas, where you

EARTH CEREMONY, performed by a local shaman. These ceremonies
thanking Mother Earth and asking for good health and safe travels have
been practiced in Peru since before the arrival of the Incas. Next, stop
at AWANAKANCHA to meet local families who preserve the ancient
technique of pre-Columbian weaving using South American camelid fibres.
Here is your chance to get up close to the various camelids, including
alpaca, llama, guanaco, and vicuña, indigenous to the region. Continue
to PISAC, an old mountain village where you will have free time to shop
its famous market for local wares such as alpaca sweaters and blankets,
jewellery, or hand-painted ornamental dishes and vases. Stay in the Sacred
Valley tonight, and enjoy a special dinner at the hotel. (B,L,D)
DAY 4 SACRED VALLEY–MACHU PICCHU.
This morning, visit the Inca Fortress of OLLANTAYTAMBO, followed by the
opportunity to visit a HOME, meet some of the locals, and experience
their way of life. Next, board the Vistadome TRAIN for a short journey
through the lush Urubamba Valley. Then, transfer to a motorcoach for the
ascent to legendary MACHU PICCHU, the “Lost City of the Incas,” high
above the steep valley overlaid with dense tropical jungle. Your Local
Guide will bring you closer to the lives and mysteries still hidden in these
amazing structures built by the pre-Columbian masters of this sacred land.

DAY 1 ARRIVE IN LIMA, PERU.
Arrive in Lima, where you will be met by your Tour Director.
DAY 2 LIMA.
This afternoon, your Local Guide focuses on the city’s colonial heritage
during a walking TOUR. Start at the Plaza de Armas to see the
Government Palace and the cathedral. From here, stroll to the venerable
SAN FRANCISCO MONASTERY with its splendid 17th-century cloister
murals. For a special treat, stop at a LOCAL PERUVIAN FOOD
MARKET to taste some typical Peruvian fruit and experience a bit of
everyday life in Lima. This evening, enjoy a welcome dinner with your
fellow travelling companions at one of Lima’s finest historic homes,
CASA GARCIA ALVARADO. (B,D)
DAY 3 LIMA–CUSCO–SACRED VALLEY.
Fly to Cusco, the impressive Andean city that was once the capital
of the Inca Empire. Head into the Sacred Valley of the Incas, where
you will enjoy a special lunch prepared exclusively for Globus guests
at a private location. Here, enjoy a live Andean band and experience
a mystical El Pago a la Tierra, or MOTHER EARTH CEREMONY,
performed by a local shaman. These ceremonies thanking Mother
Earth and asking for good health and safe travels have been practiced
in Peru since before the arrival of the Incas. Next, continue to PISAC,
an old mountain village where you will have free time to shop for
local wares such as alpaca sweaters and blankets, jewellery, or
hand-painted ornamental dishes and vases. Stay in the Sacred Valley
tonight, and enjoy a special dinner at the hotel. (B,L,D)
DAY 4 SACRED VALLEY–MACHU PICCHU.
This morning, visit the Inca Fortress of OLLANTAYTAMBO, followed
by the opportunity to visit a HOME, meet some of the locals, and
experience their traditional way of life. Next, board the Vistadome TRAIN
for a short journey through the lush Urubamba Valley. Then, transfer to
a motorcoach for the ascent to legendary MACHU PICCHU, the “Lost
City of the Incas,” high above the steep valley overlaid with dense
tropical jungle. Your Local Guide will bring you closer to the lives and
mysteries still hidden in these amazing structures built by the pre-
Columbian masters of this sacred land. Tonight, learn how to mix the
perfect Pisco Sour, Peru’s national drink, before an exquisite dinner at
the hotel. (B,L,D)
DAY 5 MACHU PICCHU–CUSCO.
Your entrance to MACHU PICCHU is included for a second day. Enjoy the
tranquility of the morning, with free time to wander the ruins at your own
pace and experience the magic that is Machu Picchu. After lunch, return
to the Sacred Valley by TRAIN and continue on to Cusco. (B,L)
DAY 6 CUSCO.
This morning, learn more about the Incas and their struggle against
invading Spaniards on your Cusco city TOUR, with visits to the imposing
CATHEDRAL and the SANTO DOMINGO MONASTERY. During your
city tour, you will be greeted by an INCA KING, so have your cameras
ready! Also visit the semi-circular KENKO Temple with its stone altars and
labyrinth of passages, and see the ancient site of Puca Pucara before the
TEMPLE OF SACSAYHUAMAN, perched on a hillside overlooking Cusco.
It remains unfathomable how and when this fortress of gigantic stones—
with some blocks weighing more than 350 tons—was built. The remainder
of your day is free to explore at your leisure. Tonight, enjoy dinner at a
local restaurant. (B,D)
DAY 7 CUSCO–JULIACA–PUNO (LAKE TITICACA).
Board a flight to Juliaca, where you will continue to Puno on the shores of
Lake Titicaca. (B,D)
DAY 8 PUNO. EXCURSION TO LAKE TITICACA.
Today, take a motorboat trip to some of the more unique islands of LAKE
TITICACA. Start with TAQUILE ISLAND, which was once part of the Inca
Empire and was one of the last areas of Peru to be conquered by Spain
in the 16th century. The Spanish banned traditional dress on the island,
which is why the Spanish peasant dress can still be found today. Next,
travel to the fascinating UROS ISLANDS, home to the Uros Indians, who

were forced to live on the lake as the Inca Indians pushed farther into their
territory. These islands are completely made by reeds and are continually
added to as they disintegrate to the bottom of the lake. (B,L,D)
DAY 9 PUNO–SILLUSTANI–JULIACA–LIMA.
Depart for Juliaca this morning, visiting the ruins of SILLUSTANI en route.
At this pre-Incan burial ground, see where the ancient Aymaras buried
their high priests in chullpas—above-ground, cylinder-shaped tombs
dating back to the 1400s. While here, spend some time with the locals,
see their HOMES, learn how they work, what they eat, and gain a better
understanding of their lives. Fly from Juliaca to Lima this afternoon. (B)
DAY 10 LIMA–PARACAS. BALLESTAS ISLANDS CRUISE
NAZCA LINES.
Enjoy a scenic drive south along the Pan-American Highway to the Bay
of Paracas. CRUISE out to the Ballestas Islands, which are inhabited
by a wide variety of sea mammals and exotic birds, including boobies,
sea lions, and Humboldt penguins. The huge Candelabro, a candelabra-
shaped etching on the Paracas cliffside, can also be seen as you cruise
back to shore. Continue to the town of Pisco, the wine capital of Peru.
Have your camera handy today as you board your aircraft for a FLIGHT
over the Nazca plains, which can only be appreciated by air. Your pilot
will point out the mysterious markings known as the NAZCA LINES,
a series of drawings of animals and geometric figures etched into the
parched soil—some up to 1,000 feet long! Theories vary, but the most
accepted belongs to German mathematician Maria Reiche, who dubbed
the land the “astronomical calendar” of the ancient Peruvians. Enjoy
dinner this evening at your hotel. (B,D)

After some free time in Paracas, return to Lima today. Tonight, your Tour

and considered one of the most important
archaeological discoveries this century due to

100 AD, these pyramid-shaped tombs made
from adobe hold many similarities to those
found in Egypt. A visit to the SIPAN MUSEUM shows a reconstruction of the tombs as
well as the artifacts found inside them. Visit the TUCUME PYRAMIDS, where ancient
mythology and legend envelops these 26 adobe pyramids that once served as a
ceremonial complex. Many natives still fear the site, known locally as “Purgatory.” (B,L)
DAY 13 CHICLAYO–TRUJILLO.
