Sound Operator
Job Role Analysis
What My Job Role Included
My Job role included mixing levels. For example if the dynamic
of the track is loud the microphones would need to increase.
In the technical rehearsal I programmed the mixing levels into
the desk. This made it easier on the night. Even though the
levels where already mixed I still had to fine tune them on the
night due to the fact when I programmed them in the technical
run through there where no audience in the theatre.
Even though I operated the sound desk on the night before the
show I made sure that all the microphones where on the right
cast members and made sure that placement was key. Once this
had been done I sound checked them all.
When I was Needed
As the sound operator I was only needed for the technical run
through and the dress runs then through to the shows.
Even though I was not needed in the rehearsal process in my
own time I ensured that I had a full understanding of the script
and the tracks. I needed to do this due to the fact I needed to
know the dynamics of the tracks.
Although I wasn’t needed in rehearsal I still went into rehearsal
to get an overview of the show.
Technical Rehearsal
The technical rehearsal was the first time I worked with the cast
and crew. This rehearsal is just for the technical team and not
the cast.
In this rehearsal I programmed the sound levels so it was easier
on the night. I marked specific points within my script
throughout the entire script.
I also needed to know the cast members ability to sing
depending on how high the faders need to be on the desk. An
example would be if the cast member is using the head voice I
would need to make sure to increase to level on the desk.
Show
Before the show starts I check that all microphones are in
working order. I check that everything is in the right please and
that everything Is where it is meant to be.
Sound check is one of the most important elements before the
starting the show. I would do this by getting all microphones on
each cast member and then lining them up on stage in front of
the sound desk a check the levels and the positioning of the
microphones too.
