Visiting detainees in immigration detention centers provides dignity for the detainees and is an opportunity to challenge injustices in the broken immigration system. Detainees live in a state of fear and worry cut off from family and the outside world. Volunteer visitors are often their only human contact and bring hope, compassion, and brightness to what is otherwise a dark experience of indefinite detention. Both detainees and visitors form friendships and gain perspective from these visits, with visitors feeling they are making a small difference for those unjustly deprived of their freedom and humanity.
