To ensure personal safety on the slopes, experienced skiers
should become familiar with the Responsibility Code, a set of
standards developed and upheld by the National Ski Patrol and the
National Ski Areas Association. This code outlines common sense
regulations that help skiers safely share and navigate common
areas. The guidelines describe proper usage of ski lifts, how to
handle malfunctioning equipment, and encourage skiers to adhere
to safe practices.
Primarily, the regulations emphasize personal responsibility and
respect for fellow skiers. This includes adhering to right-of-way
rules that describe which skier or snowboarder has priority.
Generally, anyone further down the trail has the right of way since
they cannot see a skier approaching behind them. Anyone
merging onto a trail should also yield to skiers uphill. To view the
Responsibility Code, please visit nsaa.org.
