Today You will learn about
SPOOKY SCARY SKELETONS
Major functions of skeletons include
• Support
• Movement
• Protection
• Red blood cell production
• Calcium storage
• And endocrine regulation
Boring diagram stuff I put very little
effort into finding
Ligaments connect one bone to
another creating a joint
Tendons connect muscle to bone
Bones help protect internal organs,
Store calcium, and other important
stuff
Joints
o Hinge joints are found in places like the ankle, elbow, and knee. They
can only move along the axis to flex or extend meaning they can only
move one way
o Pivot joints are freely movable joints that allow rotary movement
around a single axis. You will find one of these between the first and
second clavicle vertebrae directly under the skull allowing the head
to move from side to side
o The only ball and socket joints are the hip and shoulder and ball and
socket joints allow for the greatest range of motion of all joints
How the skeletal system works with
other systems
Skeletal system can’t
supply itself with calcium
to strengthen itself. It
relies on the digestive
system
Your brain sends signals to your
muscles to contract and when the
Muscle moves the bone follows
5 calcium rich facts about spooky scary
skeletons
The smallest bones in the body are found in the ear.
The longest bone in the body is the femur.
The bones are filled with a fatty substance called bone marrow. In this
marrow, red and white blood cells are manufactured and then released
into the bloodstream.
Over half the body's bones are in the hands and feet.
The only jointless bone in your body is the hyoid bone in your throat.
As your bones grow, you get taller (of course). Your growth in height is
likely to stop by the time you are 16 if you're a girl and 18 if you're a
boy.
Skeletal system diseases
Scoliosis is the curvature of the spine resulting from things like someone's leg being longer
than the other or muscle spasms, Some say that the curves in the spine gives the spine an
“s” like shape (as shown in the image behind)
Osteoporosis is a disease where the bones become fragile and prone to fracture
