Why Issue a New Banknote?

 Central banks issue new banknotes for two main 
reasons: 
 Normally, to replace notes that have lost their 
counterfeit resilience; and 
 Occasionally, to commemorate epochal 
events. 
 The new N100 banknote is being issued to 
commemorate our 100 years as a single united 
nation.

Examples of Commemorative Banknotes 
 Morocco—to celebrate 25 years of the country’s 
banknote production company. 
 Russia—to mark 100 days before 2014 Olympics. 
 Costa Rica—to celebrate 100 years of 
independence. 
 Belize—to celebrate 30th independence. 
 Kuwait—to celebrate 10th anniversary of the 
liberation of Kuwait. 
 Nigeria—to mark 50th independence.
The new N100 Centenary Banknote 
It is in this spirit that the Central Bank of Nigeria is 
joining the nation in celebrating 100 years of our 
amalgamation by issuing a new banknote. 
I am very proud to inform you that this note is a first of 
its kind in many respects. It has been designed and 
produced with the most advanced security 
technology in the world.

The design is premised on the following: 
 Security—resistance to counterfeiting 
 Durability—tolerance to tropics 
 Attractiveness—for use in Cash-driven economy 
 Heritage— collective memory of Nigeria 
 Transformation—First paper banknote with digital 
features
