The Rittal Aisle Containment System is increasingly being deployed in Data Centres where the average power demand of each
cabinet exceeds 5kW. Effectively using roof panels and slideable doors at each end of the row which ‘contains’ the air within
the aisle. This prevents the cold and the hot air mixing which increases the capacity of the overall system to approx
10 kW per cabinet. The other benefit is that because the cold air is now being delivered directly to the server, the cold aisle air
temperature can be raised, this means the CRAC or Inline cooling (LCP Inline) system is a lot more energy efficient which
results in long-term energy cost savings.
Cold and hot air cannot mix, warm air does not flow into the cold aisle
The system can be operated with a much higher extracted air temperature.
Standard air circulation cooling units are operated at an optimum thermal efficency level
Key Components for Aisle Containment
The key components of containment (same for both hot aisle and cold aisle) system are very simple. Firstly you need to specify
the containment dimensions and secondly the cooling system required.
The containment system is made up of roof panels and end doors. The roof panels bridge across the aisle between the racks
and the aisle and doors then close off the aisle. The roof sections are specified on the width of the aisle and the width
of the rack that they need to be secured to. The end doors quite simply match the height of the rack.
The cooling system for cold aisle and hot aisle can either be CRAC or Inline cooling, both have their advantages and limitations.

3. Let’s get smaller-
The Antec P180 mini is still
somewhat heavy & bulky for a
mATX mb. So I was attracted
to something smaller. The
Silverstone SG04FH looked
good, but with the power
supply over the cpu with only
82mm of clearance no decent
air cooler would fit.
Silverstone recommends their
NT06 but the reviews weren’t
a complimentary as I would
have liked to risk trying it.

4. Finding the right cooler
I bought the SG04FH based on I tried a Dynatron K987 on the
the comments of one user bench which seemed OK in
who had forced a Corsair H50 free air being better than the
into the case. An integrated stock cooler for my Intel i7
water cooler for the CPU 860 CPU. However, at 75 mm
seemed a good solution for height, it would be starved
this case and I had a Corsair for air in the tight confines of
H50 bought on sale just the SG04FH. A Cooler Master
waiting to be used. It seemed GeminII S also was too tall. A
like it would be a good Scythe Big Shuriken SCBSK-
solution. No joy however, I 1000 with a 120mm x 12 mm
just didn’t like the amount of fan would fit but that would
bending the flex hose had to often bump the CPU over
take and the crammed in 70oC during heavy loading. It
appearance. Back to air . . . was also hard to work around
with the large fan / radiator.

5. Enter the CoolIT ECO A.L.C.
Fry’s just started carrying Radiator mounted. Moved fan to inside
of radiator and air is drawn into the case.

6. Mounting the Radiator/Fan
Note that both Silverstone 120 mm x 25 mm fans have been removed. The radiator
mounts one hole lower on the frame than the top 120 mm fan was mounted.
Actually, these photos are misleading, in order to install the fan mounting frame in
the case with the radiator at the top, I had to install the radiator over the smaller of
the two filter meshes. Note there is room for a 90 mm fan below the radiator.

8. CM 700W Silent Pro & XFX HD5850
Note the PS air intake is over the CPU. This helps draw air through the case as well
as cool the voltage regulators around the CPU. Air flow is front to back mostly
through the power supply and to some extent, the graphics card. Crossfire?
