An angel tells Mary she will give birth to Jesus. Mary and Joseph travel to Bethlehem for a census and find no room at the inn, so Jesus is born in a stable. Shepherds and Wise Men are led to Jesus and bring him gifts. Mary, Joseph, and Jesus flee to Egypt to escape King Herod who wants to harm the baby.

Esther has a disturbing sexual encounter with a professor named Irwin. Though she expects it to be transformative, she instead feels sharp pain and begins bleeding heavily. She goes to Joan for help and is taken to the hospital. Several nights later, Esther is informed that Joan has gone missing from the asylum and is later found to have hanged herself in the woods. Esther is left distressed by these events and her unstable mental state.
Amelia cherishes her desert home in west Texas but despises King Culhane, a towering cowboy with silver eyes, despite having worshipped him when younger. As her father pushes her to marry King's mild-mannered brother to join the Culhane dynasty, Amelia pretends to be demure but King sees through her act. When their true feelings are revealed, their intense passion cannot be denied and everything including propriety, duty, and even love will be scorched in its wake.
Much of this message is presented elsewhere with the title The Hidden Face of Jesus. In this message, which is much longer, the focus will be on the humor of Jesus on that first Easter day, as he played tricks on his disciples. In this message we see the playful side of the risen Christ. You may not see the humor at first, but in the concluding part of the message we look at the characteristics of humor, and you will see how this whole account is a comedy. I begin with a contemporary translation of the story of the walk on the road to Emmaus, which I also call the most humorous Easter in history.
Faithful John faithfully serves the king until his death. He promises to protect the king's young son. When the son becomes king, Faithful John shows him all the treasures of the castle except one room containing a portrait of a princess. The king falls in love with the portrait and insists on seeing her. Faithful John helps the king win the princess by tricking her onto a ship with gifts of gold. During the voyage and wedding, Faithful John saves the king three times by following the prophecies of three ravens, but in doing so is turned to stone. The king and queen mourn the loss of their faithful servant.
Faolan Mildfire journeys to find his childhood friend Azariel, who was banished to live in the shadow world when they were young. He seeks the help of the wizard Slydalf, the only one to return from the shadow world, to return Azariel home. However, Faolan discovers the portal to the shadow world was destroyed, so he must now travel the land to find the missing pieces of the portal and bring his friend back.
Paul discusses the importance of love over other gifts like faith, prophecy, or knowledge. He states that without love, these gifts mean nothing. Love is described as patient, kind, not envious or boastful, and as enduring all things. Prophecies and tongues will cease but love will never end.

The document is a prayer asking God to gather people into God's loving embrace and pour God's wise and holy Spirit upon them so they can become faithful servants. It acknowledges God seeks people in places of ignorance and despair. The prayer ends with "Amen."

This story is about a young Roman girl named Ella who loses her parents at a young age. On her third birthday, she finds a letter from God saying he has a plan for her. Years later, after a tsunami wipes out most of Rome, Ella is the only survivor found by Moses, a young Jewish boy. Moses cares for Ella like a sister. They develop a close bond over the years until Ella's 10th birthday approaches and she insists they return to Rome to reunite with her parents, as the letter from God foretold.
The Wisdom Books were composed after the Babylonian exile and include Proverbs, Job, Ecclesiastes, Sirach, and the Song of Songs. They aim to inspire moral integrity and show how sin can lead to personal collapse. They discuss issues like justice, suffering, and finding meaning in life. A key theme is that wisdom is trusting God even when facing difficulties that cannot be understood.
The document discusses King Solomon and the books of Kings in the Bible. It summarizes Solomon's reign, including his building of the Temple in Jerusalem, his request for wisdom from God, and his establishment of districts and elite groups. However, Solomon's reign was also marked by extravagance, oppression of the people, and the king's turn to idolatry. The document examines issues like exploitation during Solomon's time and questions the extent of his actual wisdom and authorship of biblical texts.
Rose, the youngest of seven children meant to replace her dead sister, feels out of place in her family. When a large white bear offers to help Rose's ailing family if she comes away with it, she agrees. The bear takes Rose to a distant empty castle where she is visited each night by a mysterious stranger. Rose discovers the stranger's identity and loses her heart to him, realizing her journey has just begun. The story is a bold retelling of the classic tale "East of the Sun and West of the Moon" and moves like Beauty and the Beast yet feels fresh like the best fantasy tales.
The Cure for Asaph's Disease (Series Part 1)Paulo Rabello
This document summarizes Asaph's spiritual crisis as described in Psalm 73. It explains that Asaph suffered from a "disease" of apostasy and envy of the wicked, which eroded his spiritual memory and perception of life in God. The disease had three stages: being slowly carried away, losing memory of spiritual truths, and complete erosion of faith. It notes three safeguards Asaph learned: watch your words, use your spiritual memory, and enter God's sanctuary. The crisis helped Asaph understand God's goodness and the different destinies of the wicked and righteous.
The document appears to be analyzing various characters - Christof, Angela, Truman, Marlon, Sylvia, and Kirk - by comparing them to other things through phrases like "Powerful like magic" and listing their traits such as "Commanding, Authoritative, God" for Christof. It explores the characters' relationships and roles through comparisons to things like friends, mothers, knights, and deception. Overall, the document analyzes the traits and relationships of multiple characters through comparative phrases and listed characteristics.
Jade is torn between her duty to protect the Legacy bloodline and her growing feelings for Dalen. Dalen orders Jade to kill Lyra and give her blood to the demon Xylen, increasing his power over the Olympians. Jade knows she must find a way to delay and stall without blowing her cover, even if it costs her life, to protect the Legacy who is not yet ready to face Xylen. Meanwhile, Reias is also wrestling with his conscience as Zeus has ordered him to bring Solan to Olympus to fulfill his duty, just after Minos' birthday.
Father Hope witnesses a girl strangling another girl in the churchyard. The next day, he collapses after being questioned about missing an event. He later finds Mrs. Higgles dead in the woods. People gather to bury Mrs. Higgles while Father Hope sits in the church hall. He takes Mrs. Higgles' usual route and finds blood where an unknown girl was killed. Father Hope calls Father McFlyn for help, and they perform an exorcism in the woods, freeing a possessed girl's spirit.
Herbert George Wells was born in 1866 in England to a poor family. He had to work from a young age to support his education. His academic success earned him a place at a London college of science, after which he became a teacher. However, his poor health made teaching difficult, and he struggled to balance work with his writing.
The story describes Israel Murphy, a human who served as a governor to an alien species that colonized Earth. The aliens have now abandoned Earth, leaving humanity with nothing. Israel watches helplessly as the last ship carrying the aliens leaves. He returns home, knowing an angry mob will come for him as a representative of the oppressors. Israel prepares for a trial or punishment, but is instead confronted by an enraged former slave seeking vengeance.
Loki, the Norse god of trickery, engineered the death of Balder by tricking his blind brother into shooting a holly arrow, and tricked a jotunn into building a wall for free and dwarves into making magical artifacts. Rebecca plotted against her older son Jacob by disguising him as Esau to receive Isaac's blessing. Anansi tricked hornets, a snake, and a leopard to pay for stories. Morgan LeFay tricked Merlin into teaching her magic then trapped him and tricked her brother Arthur into having a child to fulfill a prophecy. Durza deceived others to capture Eragon alive. Lucifer deceived Adam and Eve and tried but failed to tempt
The king asked three princes to go on a one-year adventure so his daughter, the princess, would have more time to choose a husband. Each prince found a magical item: one found a crystal ball, another a magic carpet, and the third healing oil. While they were gone, the princess fell ill. The princes returned on the carpet and healed her with the oil. She ultimately married the old man who brought the oil because he understood her feelings best.
Cafechurch Session: Why did Jesus have to die?Alister Pate
Why did Jesus have to die? Did God somehow cause Judas to betray him? What does it mean for God to have a plan, and what does how we unpack that mean for our picture of God?
This passage from Matthew discusses Jesus expanding on the commandments from the Old Testament. Jesus says that anger and insults can be just as sinful as murder, and that lustful thoughts are akin to adultery. He also addresses divorce and vows, taking a stricter view than previous teachings. The document provides commentary analyzing the cultural context of Jesus' teachings and how they can apply to modern understandings of relationships, shame, and grace.
The document discusses biblical passages about failures of leadership and the consequences. It describes how Samuel's sons did not follow his ways as judges and the people asked for a king. Saul was chosen but later died for his unfaithfulness. Rehoboam did not listen to the people's requests and increased their burdens. The document asks questions about whether failures are worse for Christian leaders and discusses examples of poor leadership throughout history in the Catholic church. It closes with a prayer.
Belief and the Resurrection Part 3: CallAlister Pate
Is the fundamental problem of our culture meaninglessness? Or is it anxiety? Are they connected? In this presentation we look at anxiety and the gospel category of Call as its solution.
Resurrection and the Meaningless UniverseAlister Pate
We live in a culture of meaninglessness. This much seems uncontroversial, however much we try to veil that fact from ourselves. In the crucifixion of Jesus, God in God's own self experienced the utmost in abandonment, crying "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
The resurrection of Jesus is God's great "however." despair and meaninglessness does not have the final say. God vindicates Jesus' life poured out for others, and opens the way for us to to have a full human life, participating with God in God's redemptive work in the world.
This is the second in a series of sessions about the Resurrection at Cafechurch.
Practice Resurrection: What Does It Mean to Believe in the Resurrection of Je...Alister Pate
We talk about belief a lot in our culture. But what do we actually mean by it? In this session we look at what "belief" means in the context of the Resurrection. It is not just a passive bit of knowledge that sits in your head like the year WW2 ended. It is transformative, and is more something you do than something you think. #practiceresurrection
The fundamental fact of your life is that God loves you. Because of Jesus' solidarity with us in baptism, what God says to him, God says to all of us: You are my child, the beloved. In you I am well pleased.
That is primary: everything else, including your sense of your own sinfulness, is secondary.
Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action. And by this we will know that we are from the truth and will reassure our hearts before him whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 1 John 3:18-20
Have you ever wondered why Jesus got baptised, given that he was without sin? In this presentation we explore three different levels of meaning in Baptism, which suggests an answer to that question.
The presentation draws on Rowan Williams' excellent little book Being Christian.

What does eating in a pub once a week have to do with the mission of God? This is a presentation on how Cafechurch seeks to participate in the Missio Dei.
It is true that the universe is huge. Staggeringly, vertigo-creatingly vast. But does it therefore follow that any hypothetical God would therefore not care about humans? Consider the question: which is more important to me - the external monitor I am looking at while type this, or the laptop which is plugged into it?
We then use ideas from Charles Taylor's book "A Secular Age" to try to move from "what's happening" to "what's really going on."
Jesus, we are told, went back to his home town. But people there didn't buy his story, and said, essentially: who on earth do you think you are? We have known you forever. And he was amazed to see that he could do no deeds of power there, besides heal a few people (And, really who can't do that? (Joke, obvs.)) (This is my very brief precis of Mark 6:1-6 )
People rejected him because they though they knew what he had to say. That's kind of like our culture - it thinks it knows what Christianity is and who Jesus is, and think they have rejected him. But do they? What is going on here? To open up the discussion we spent a while thinking about different archetypes from our culture, and archetypes who represent more Kingdom values.
It was a good evening, and we had a good conversation, so I was enthused to blog about it (as part of his current Charles Taylor obsession.)
Here's the blurb and a link:
Do you find the story of Jesus' self-giving love profoundly meaningful? Or do you sometimes wonder whether he should have just kept his head down and stuck to carpentry? It's one of the most profound questions of our age.

The story of Jonah and the Whale is complex. It leads us to ask: where is God in suffering? When Jonah is sitting in the pitch dark in his whale, with only the smell of decomposing fish for company, a long, long way from the light of the sun, he sang a psalm of both lament and praise. Is God somehow active in the dark night of the soul?

What is the relationship between Wellness and Christianity? What does California have to do with Jerusalem? In this presentation we think about the similarities and differences, and consider how we might integrate wellness with our faith, without identifying the one with the other.

Right before Jesus heads off to the wilderness, he is baptised and hears God's affirmation: "This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased." But what does this mean for our identity as baptised persons? This session follows the first chapter of Rowan Williams' excellent book "Being Christian"
Salt that loses its saltiness? Cities on hills? Lamps? What on earth is Jesus talking about - and what could it possibly mean to exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees? A Cafechurch session from 7/2/2016
Jesus said, shockingly, "‘Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple" (Luke 14:26.)
What are we to make of these strange, paradoxical words? One way into it is to take a look at what Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard said about the three modes of life - the aesthetic, the ethical, and the religious.
While not wanting to domesticate these strange words, we can perhaps get a better insight into what they might mean for us today.
Jesus performs a miracle where he feeds over 5,000 people with just five loaves of bread and two fish. His disciples want to send the crowds away to find food for themselves, but Jesus tells them to feed the people instead. He blesses and breaks the bread, and it is multiplied so that everyone is able to eat until full, with leftovers filling twelve baskets. The passage illustrates Jesus' compassion and generosity in providing for the great crowd that had gathered to hear him speak.
It's hard to explain something as simple as soccer in a few minutes. How much harder to summarize the Gospel! In this presentation we watch a cool dude with a traditional message, and then think about the pros and cons of both his presentation, and the theology underlying it.
Lição 12: João 15 a 17 – O Espírito Santo e a Oração Sacerdotal | 2° Trimestr...OmarBarrezueta1
The pervasiveness of Lying in today's World.pptxniwres
In our interconnected world, lies weave through the fabric of society like hidden threads. We encounter them in politics, media, personal relationships, and even within ourselves. The prevalence of deception raises profound questions about truth, trust, and the human condition.

Lucid Dreaming: Understanding the Risks and Benefits
The ability to control one's dreams or for the dreamer to be aware that he or she is dreaming. This process, called lucid dreaming, has some potential risks as well as many fascinating benefits. However, many people are hesitant to try it initially for fear of the potential dangers. This article aims to clarify these concerns by exploring both the risks and benefits of lucid dreaming.
The Benefits of Lucid Dreaming
Lucid dreaming allows a person to take control of their dream world, helping them overcome their fears and eliminate nightmares. This technique is particularly useful for mental health. By taking control of their dreams, individuals can face challenging scenarios in a controlled environment, which can help reduce anxiety and increase self-confidence.
Addressing Common Concerns
Physical Harm in Dreams Lucid dreaming is fundamentally safe. In a lucid dream, everything is a creation of your mind. Therefore, nothing in the dream can physically harm you. Despite the vividness and realness of the dream experience, it remains entirely within your mental landscape, posing no physical danger.
Mental Health Risks Concerns about developing PTSD or other mental illnesses from lucid dreaming are unfounded. As soon as you wake up, it's clear that the events experienced in the dream were not real. On the contrary, lucid dreaming is often seen as a therapeutic tool for conditions like PTSD, as it allows individuals to reframe and manage their thoughts.
Potential Risks of Lucid Dreaming
While generally safe, lucid dreaming does come with a few risks as well:
Mixing Dream Memories with Reality Long-term lucid dreamers might occasionally confuse dream memories with real ones, creating false memories. This issue is rare and preventable by maintaining a dream journal and avoiding lucid dreaming about real-life people or places too frequently.
Escapism Using lucid dreaming to escape reality can be problematic if it interferes with your daily life. While it is sometimes beneficial to escape and relieve the stress of reality, relying on lucid dreaming for happiness can hinder personal growth and productivity.
Feeling Tired After Lucid Dreaming Some people report feeling tired after lucid dreaming. This tiredness is not due to the dreams themselves but often results from not getting enough sleep or using techniques that disrupt sleep patterns. Taking breaks and ensuring adequate sleep can prevent this.
Mental Exhaustion Lucid dreaming can be mentally taxing if practiced excessively without breaks. It’s important to balance lucid dreaming with regular sleep to avoid mental fatigue.
Lucid dreaming is safe and beneficial if done with caution. It has many benefits, such as overcoming fear and improving mental health, and minimal risks. There are many resources and tutorials available for those interested in trying it.

Astronism, Cosmism and Cosmodeism: the space religions espousing the doctrine...Cometan
This lecture created by Brandon Taylorian (aka Cometan) specially for the CESNUR Conference held Bordeaux in June 2024 provides a brief introduction to the legacy of religious and philosophical thought that Astronism emerges from, namely the discourse on transcension started assuredly by the Cosmists in Russia in the mid-to-late nineteenth century and then carried on and developed by Mordecai Nessyahu in Cosmodeism in the twentieth century. Cometan also then provides some detail on his story in founding Astronism in the early twenty-first century from 2013 along with details on the central Astronist doctrine of transcension. Finally, the lecture concludes with some contributions made by space religions and space philosophy and their influences on various cultural facets in art, literature and film.

Introduction
Mantra Yoga is an exact science. "Mananat trayate iti mantrah- by the Manana (constant thinking or recollection) of which one is protected or is released from the round of births and deaths, is Mantra." That is called Mantra by the meditation (Manana) on which the Jiva or the individual soul attains freedom from sin, enjoyment in heaven and final liberation, and by the aid of which it attains in full the fourfold fruit (Chaturvarga), i.e., Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha. A Mantra is so called because it is achieved by the mental process.
2. She was five
sure of the facts
and recited them
with slow solemnity
convinced every word
was revelation
3. they were so poor
they had only peanut butter and jelly
sandwiches to eat
and they went a long way from home
without getting lost. The lady rode
a donkey, the man walked, and the baby
was inside the lady.
4. They had to stay in a stable
with an ox and an ass (hee-hee)
but the Three Rich Men found them
because a start lited the roof
5. Shepherds came and you could
pet the sheep but not feed them.
Then the baby was borned.
And do you know who he was?
7. And she jumped in the air
whirled round, dove into the sofa
and buried her head under the cushion
which is the only proper response
to the Good News of the Incarnation.
