A System
FOR
Building Collaborative Group Processes
TO
Enhance Learning
i-Collaborate is part of BackPackLive
Project (Phase 2 schools)
A joint collaboration between Ministry of
Education (Singapore), Info-Comm
Authority (Singapore) and Microsoft,
started in 2010
Background Information
Innova Primary School, Singapore
BPL – as an
opportunity for
innovation in using
ICT for T&L
Framed concept
within BPL’s
requirement on the
use of emerging
technology for T&L
Based on theory of
social constructivism
for learning
A targeted
approach - work on
how CoL impacts
students’ scientific
reasoning
Emerging
technology needs
to have capability
to capture sufficient
data during student
discourse for
teachers to make
informed decisions
to address learning
gaps
Team brainstormed
on possible
technology that
allow typed texts to
be captured for
analysis
From searching online
tools, the team struck
on Semantic Analysis,
a data-mining
technology that could
be adapted and
assimilated for our
intended purpose
How it all started …
Background Information
Innova Primary School, Singapore
The school uses Semantic Analysis within an
interactive learning system - i-Collaborate System
(iCS) jointly developed with an industry partner
Undergirding premise of learning:
•Learning is social
(Vygotsky - social constructivist learning theory)
•Create cognitive dissonance:
Social interactions allow cognitive scaffolding

About the iCS Semantic Analysis Engine
The semantic analysis engine is an Artificial Intelligence
technology. Semantic analysis is theoretically the process of
approximating concepts of relating:
 syntactic structures,
 from the levels of phrases,
 clauses,
 sentences and
 paragraphs to the level of the writing as a whole.
It will be the cornerstone of Web 4.0 which uses semantic analysis and other
artificial intelligence technologies in order to ‘think and make decisions’ with
regards to user searches and content.

iCS Semantic Analysis Engine
Its inbuilt learning analytics in iCS provides semantic
analysis with accompanying reports which the
teacher:
can review to check on students' understanding of a
subject matter,
address the students' learning gaps,
and even the students' learning style.
Innova Primary School, Singapore
iCS Semantic Analysis Engine
Semantic analysis engine is running behind iCS to
conduct the comprehensive analysis of students’
posts and students’ group processes to develop
suggestions to the educators for appropriate
interventions, to reinforce any positive work done by
the students.
The Semantics engine in AIM@iCS was developed
by Integral solution Asia and UK office specially for
the Education sector.

IT Solution
Innova Primary School (Singapore)
A web-based solution which employs a semantic
analysis engine within an interactive learning
system.
Interactive learning system comprises a suite of
learning tools coupled with interactive functions
(e.g. group discussions, posting comments, etc.)
What is iCS?
IT Solution
Innova Primary School (Singapore)
A semantic analysis engine is a data mining
technology for harvesting large amount of texts (
as typed in by students during learning activities)
according to pre-set parameters.
The generated data (learning analytics) can then
be used for intended analysis by teachers for
intervention purposes.
What is Semantic Analysis Engine?
IT Solution
Innova Primary School (Singapore)
Allows student thinking to be made visible,
captured and analysed to address both social and
cognitive learning gaps (as part of social
constructivist learning process); and
Allows teacher to have better understanding of
students, which would result in better
customisation of resources and activities for
intervention.
Why iCS?
IT Solution
Innova Primary School (Singapore)
Enables assessment of student performance in:
Social learning patterns
(Social learning – promotes CoL through
improvement in group processes)
Content mastery level
(Cognitive learning – enhances thinking skills, in
particular, scientific reasoning in the learning of
Science)
