36. APJ ABDUL KLAM
A short story, rather plain looking six-year-old
boy, stood on a sandy beach. The translucent
waters of the waves lapped gently on shore.
The leafy fronds of the tall cocunut plams
danced in the breeze. Screeching birds circled
the sky hoping to grab a tasty tibdit or tow, as
the fisherman unloaded the days cats from
their nets.
Usually these were sights and sounds that
never ceased to excite the little boy. Today
however all he could see was the magical
process of strips of wood being joined together
37. and transformed into a boat in the expert
hands of his father and old cousin, Jallaludin.
From then on every day, as soon as the young
to the beach and watch for hours as the various
parts of the boat came together to form a
sturdy, ferry boat. And, as he wathed, the seeds
of a future engineer were being sown. His
curiousty and thirst for knoeledge would be the
driving force that guided him through the
years.
EARLY CHIDHOOD
Kalam was born on october 15, 1931 in
rameswaram, an island tucked away in the
southernmost tip of India. His ancestral home
on mosque street was a large and simple
people structure. Kalam spent his childhood
there along with his grandmother, parents,
three brothers, a sister, and a few cousins.
38. Kalam s parents were simple people. They had
neither wealth, nor education. They lived
frugally and were considerd an ideal cousin.
39. Kalams parents were simple people. They had
neither wealth, nor education. They lived
frugally and were considerd an ideal couple.
What they lacked in wealth and education was
more than made up for by their generosity of
sprit. No one was ever turned away from their
door without food or a wood of advice. Even as
a child, kalam was amazed at the number of
people whom his mother fed daily in their
house—far more than the numer of family
members!
And more importantly, even through ther was
not much money to go around, there was one
thing that was avialable in plenty—love!
Ashiamma, kalams mother, was a tall good
looking lady whom came from a distinguished
family. One of her ancestors had been
bestowed the title of bhadur by the British.
40. However, she readily adapted to the life of
austerity and was always good natured. It was
from her that he got his goood heatedness and
deep kindness towards all.
Kalam was Ashiammas favourite child. Often,
she served him his food on a freshly cut banana
leaf, as they sat together on the kithen floor.
The meal usually comprised of rice, yummy
sambhar, a variety of home-made pickels and
delicious coconut chutney, the tastes that he
alaways yearned for even when he became the
president of the country. Kalam was very
attached to his mother.
Jainulabdeen, kalams father was a very
displined man. He woke up at 4a.m. every day.
After reciting the namaz, he would walk six
kilometres to a small cocunut grove that they
owned. On his return, he never failed to bring a
41. dozen or so cocunuts for the family, ans aftter
handing them over to his wife he would sit
down for breakfast, a routine that he followed
day in and day out, until his late sixties!
Jainulabdeen made a living by the sale of
cocunuts from his farm and by ferrying pilgrims
across the sea to Dhanushkodi. Pilgrims would
arrive there from far and near to take a dip in
the sangam—aplace where the waters of the
Bay of Bengal and the indian ocean merged.
Kalam father was straightforward man, and
although he lacked formal education, his caring
nature and wisdom more than made up for it.
He was respected by one and all in the town of
which he was also the iman of the mosque.
People often came to him for advice, which he
gave unstintingly. In his autobiograpy, My
journey, he mentioned that he once asked his
42. father, “Why do those people come to you?
What is it that you do for them?”
Decades later, his fathers words still echoed in
his ears, “Whenever people are in trouble, they
look for someone to help them. Every anguish,
longing and desire finds its own special
helper.”
His father was also a rigteous man. Once, when
he was elected as the chairman of the
panchayat, a man arrived in their house. “I have
a parcel for your father,” he said. As his father
was not at home, kalam who was engrossed in
his studies, asked the man to leave the parcel
on the cot. When his father retuned and saw
the expensive gift, he was livid. For the first
time in his life, kalam got asound thrashing.
Later, quoting from the Islamic Hadith, `When
God places someone in a position, He takes
43. care of all his needs,`his father explained, “A
gift will always come with some expectation. It
is dangerours. It is like trying to play with a
snake and inviting a poisonous bite. “It was a
lesson that kalam always carried in his heart
and which prompted him to never accept a gift
from anyone.
GROWING UP IN RAMESWARAM
By and large life in Rameswaram was quite
uneventful, other than the temple festivals not
much happened there. But life was not always
smooth and easy. Most of the east coast of
India is a cyclone-prone area. During kalam
childhood, Rameswaram was hit by a terrible
cyclone. The children all huddled together in
the dim flickering light of the lantern. Outside,
the winds howled and hurtled across the land
at speeds of more than 100 miles per hour.
44. Trees were yanked out from the earth. The
roofs of many houses were blow off.
The sea, which was usually a benevolent friend,
became a ferocious beast, destroying
everything in its path.
The Pamban bridge collapsed. The roaring
waters in the palk Strait swept away a train
filled with passengers. Boats that had been
bobbing gently in the waters were tossed about
crazily in the waves and swallowed by the sea,
or ran ground as wrecks. Their ferry boat, which
kalam had observed his father and cousin build
with such loving care, was also submerged by
the lashing waves.
Kalam was devasted, but his fathers face was
serene. He took the blow to his finances in his
stride without fretting. Kalam learned an
45. important lesson that day that one should take
even the stormsof adversity in one stride.
FIRST JOB AT 8!
Bacpan ke din. A timetime that is filled with joy
and happiness kalam, like most buys his age,
climbed trees and played games with his
friends—they laughed, they fought, they made
up.
However, the carefree days of his childhood
aburty came to an end. It was the year 1939, a
landmark year in the history of world. War
clouds were lomming. Navi Germany was on
the ramapge with adolf hitler bent on achiveing
his dubious goals. Sane voices around the world
tried to stop him, including Gamdhiji, Who
wrote hitler a personal letter,
46. Dear Friend,
…Will you listen to appeal of one who has
deliberatly shunned the method of war not
without considerable success?....
But his passionate plea fell on deaf ears.
Nothing and no one could dissuade the
headstrong dictator from setting off on the
path of destruction and annihilation.
On September 1,1939, germany attacked
poland. Britian and France related by attacking
Germany. These events sonwballed into a war
of horrendous magnitude. The great powers of
the world took sides and got divided into two
major forces---the Allies and the Axis. This
conflict---the deadlist in humans history
involving thirty nations and claming millions of
lives---was termed as World War Tow and
lasted six long terrible years.
47. Although, the war did not directly impact the
lives of Indian people, indirectly it did, as Indian
people, indirectly it did, as India was a colony
opf british Empire. Britain had placed sanctions
on some goods and rationd many others. Prices
skyrocketed. The people who were already
struggling to make ends meet, as in the case of
kalam`s family, were further affected. Food,
clothes and other needs were out of there
reach and difficult to procure.
Kalam tried to help in his own way. For some
strage reason, the war triggered a sudden
demand for tamarind seeds. Happily, kalam
would collect bagsful of them and sell them to
a local grocery store on mosque street. He paid
one anna for his efforts.
Around that time, Kalam`s cousin came up with
an irresistible proposal. Samasuddin was the
48. sole distributer of newspaper in Rameswaram.
Every day, the newspapers were brought in by
the madras-Dhanushkodi mail and then
distributed in the town. Inexplicably, traion
stopped halting at Rameswaram.
Samasddin was perpkexed. How was he to
deliver the newspaper into the hands of eager
readers who wanted to stay abreast of the war
and read about the latest developments in
India’s struggle for freedom?
He hit upon a simple yet highly effective
solution. The newspapers would be bundled
together and then hurled out of the moving
train onto the platform. Samasudin offered
kalam the job of collecting them and delivering
them to the people of the town.
49. Aware of the dire circumstances of his family,
kalam eagerly accepted the offer and became a
wage earner at the tender age of eight!
As he already had a set daily routine, the kalam
now had to squeeze in his job as well. Way
before night turned to the day, he would wake
up, quickly bathe and then rush for special
coaching in mathamatics that his father had
arranged for him. Lessons over, he would
return home by 5 a.m., and he escorted to the
arabic school nearby where he learned the
Koran sharif.
Once school was over, Kalam had to do the
rounds of the customers again. This time it was
to collect the dues, which he had to hand over
to smasuddin later in the evening.
His responsibility fulfilled, he would have his
dinner, do his homework by the flickering light
