This document reviews the science, policy, and practices around reducing emissions from forest degradation. It finds that degradation emissions are a significant source of greenhouse gases that have been underestimated. Degradation occurs through logging, fuelwood harvesting, and fires, and the estimates of its emissions vary widely due to limitations in remote sensing and data. Degradation can also catalyze additional emissions and deforestation. Successful strategies for reducing degradation include improved forest management through certification, better fire management, more efficient fuelwood use, and community-based forest protection. Measuring and monitoring degradation emissions is challenging but important for including degradation in REDD+ programs.
