1. SMALL ARMS TRAINER
HIGH FIDELITY SKILLS AND TACTICAL
TRAINING
The small arms trainer is a modular
system that can be combined in
several configurations depending on
customer requirements and training
objectives. Main system components
are the projection system, training
weapons and the instructor station.
Marksmanship Training
Thanks to the accurate aim point
evaluation system, training can be focused
on the basic skills training including
weapons handling and firing against
stationary or moving targets. The virtual
environment provide training in different
weather conditions and at any time of day.
Tactical training
Tactical training can be performed in
groups with trainees equipped with
different types of weapons. You can
also define subgroups with the ability
to move around independently in the
virtual terrain and to cooperate with other
subgroups to accomplish their tasks.
Projection System
The modular projection system can be
seamless extended to accommodate
additional trainee positions. The basic
module has a projection area of 2.5 m x
1.9 m and is compatible with real NVG
equipment.
Aim point evaluation
A key component in the small arms skills
trainer is the aim point evaluation system.
By using special high resolution and high
speed cameras with the ability to detect
laser spots from firing weapons projected
on the screen, the system makes it possible
to accurately evaluate hit, miss and aiming
accuracy. The laser spot is class 1 eye safe
and invisible for the naked eye.
Virtual terrain database
The terrain database is generic with
typical environments such as urban,
desert, jungle and sea. Customer defined
terrain databases can also be created,
taking into account specific buildings,
roads and other infrastructure as well
as geographical similarities. The terrain
database also contains parameters
for season, time of day and weather
conditions. All terrains and models are
dynamic and provide realistic behaviour

when hit with various ammunitions.
Training weapons
The training weapons are modified
originals or replicas made to the exact
weight, CG and dimensions of the real
weapons. All types of weapons - pistols,
assault rifles, sniper rifles, light and
heavy machine guns and others - can be
replicated and used in the trainer.
The training weapons are fitted with
sensors for monitoring the actual status
of the weapon making sure the proper
procedure and handling is applied.
Instructors
The instructor station facilitates and
improves controls and management of
ongoing exercises. Initially the instructor
defines the scenario in the scenario editor
tool where location of the exercise, blue
and red forces and civilians are defined.
The behaviour of the red forces and
civilians are controlled by the system’s
artificial intelligence.
During execution of a scenario the
instructor can intervene with the exercise
in real time and change the conditions and
add or remove entities. The flow of the
exercise is monitored on a 2D map or 3D
stealth view in the virtual terrain.
After Action Review
All events in the exercise are recorded for
replay and analysis as a part of the After
Action Review. The system automatically
evaluates the firings and presents statistics
on ammunition fired, hits and misses.
