Guiding Principles

SSB is one of India's Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs).
•
It functions under the administrative control of the Ministry
of Home Affairs (MHA).
•
The force is headed by a Director-General (DG), an officer
from the Indian Police Service.
•
The Force Headquarters (FHQ) is located in New Delhi.
Organizational Structure
Force HQ (New Delhi)
Headed by the Director-General (DG), who is assisted
by Special DGs and Additional DGs.
Field Formations

Frontier HQ: Headed by an Inspector-General (IG).
•
Sector HQ: Headed by a Deputy Inspector-General
(DIG).
•
Battalion: The primary operational unit, headed by
a Commandant.
•
Border Outpost (BOP): The frontline post.
Command Hierarchy
Border Guarding: Guarding the open Indo-Nepal (1,751 km) and Indo-Bhutan (699 km)
borders.
Preventing Crime: Intercepting trans-border crimes like smuggling, human trafficking,
and illegal arms trade.
Regulating Entry: Preventing unauthorized entry into or exit from Indian territory.
Civic Action: Conducting 'Civic Action Programmes' to win the trust of the border
population.
Role in Peacetime
Army Command: Placed under the operational command of the Indian Army.
Protecting Rear Areas: Ensuring the security of rear areas and vital installations.
Guarding Supply Lines: Securing lines of communication and supply routes.
Refugee Management: Controlling and managing the flow of refugees.
Role in Wartime
Areas of Responsibility (AOR)
Indo-Nepal Border
Spanning 1,751 km across Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar,
West Bengal, and Sikkim. It's an open border, posing unique
challenges.
Indo-Bhutan Border
Covering 699 km across Sikkim, West Bengal, Assam, and
Arunachal Pradesh. This border is crucial for maintaining strong
bilateral relations.
Internal Security
Deployed for IS duties in states like
J&K, Chhattisgarh (Anti-Naxal Ops),
and in election duties.
Women in SSB
(Mahila)
One of the first CAPFs to induct
women in combat roles. Has
several Mahila Battalions.
Humanitarian
Work
Actively involved in rescue and
relief operations during natural
disasters in their AOR.
Other Key Roles
