Scottish wedding traditions include distinct engagement, celebration, and attire customs. For engagement, a groom either formally asks the bride's father for permission or sends a friend to negotiate on his behalf. Weddings typically take place in churches due to Christianity's influence, though some occur outdoors. Brides often wear white or blue dresses for their wealth and purity, while grooms don traditional kilts. Ceremonies involve traditional foods like haggis and wedding cakes are cut into small slices to symbolize a fruitful marriage. Alcoholic drinks like champagne are common to celebrate the newlywed couple.

Scottish Wedding Costumes
Marriage is existed in all communities as well as in the Scottish society . In fact, Scotland
has its their own wedding traditions and sites that Scottish citizens particularly follow and
practice. Marriage traditions which people practice are quietly distinguished, and people who
want to get married always practice them in evnironment that full of joy. Although marriage
ceremonies are similare in the way that people celebrate, the Scottish wedding processes go
through several distinctive steps which are engagement processes , selecting places, wedding
dresses, and wedding food.
Asking a father’s permission to marry his daughter is one of the basic things a person
must do. In the Scottish society there are two ways a groom follows as a part of betrothal
process, and one way is the formal way when a groom goes to the expected bride’s father just to
ask him for a permission to marry his lovely daughter. According to Budd, “ The groom -to -be
would approach the father of his intended bride and ask for her hand(E.M.Budd.2000. p 8) .” Of
course, this is the regular way that people use as an engagement proceeding in Scotland.
Moreover, the another way is that the Scottish people practice in the betrothal procedure; this
way is a quite strange , but not in Scotland because the intended groom gives one of his best
friend to mediate between the expected groom and bride’s father just to convince him to accept
the fiancé effort. According to Budd, “ It is agame- like ritual where a friend the intended groom-
who often serve as best man negotiated getting permission from the father of the
bride.” (E.M.Budd.2000. p 8.) Furthermore, this kind of engagement processes still practice in

Scotland. To sum up, one of the basic rules that individuals follow before they get married is
requested their effort to the future wifes who may accept marring them or not.
Choosing a place to celebrate the lovely couple wedding is the second thing they do.
There are several places people prefer doing their wedding ceremonies in. Furthermore, in
Scotland, Christianity is the major religion which has strong impact on people’s decisions about
choosing the wedding place. The reason for celebrating the new couple marriage in churches
such as the Church of Scotlad because Christianity in the is domenated religion in Scotland( P,
Levy, & J, Ong, p.81.) This explain why those people tend to celebrate the wedding in churches,
and this kind of marriage which hold on a church is known as religious marriage. However,
marriage can be celebrated their wedding outdoor . They may choose to hold it on a place they
have an agreement for celebrating their life’s event. For example, some expected couples
conduct their wedding in homes, historical places, and even in boats. It is really a great idea
when a groom and his beloved bride celebrate this tremendous day of their lives in open-door
due to being surrounded by birds’ tweets if they hold it on a park. In fact, this kind of marriage
which people practice in this northern country, and it’s called civl marriage. In summary, holding
a wedding indoor or outdoor is a part of wedding celebration that is practiced in Scottish
community as a kind of enjoying their happiness with people who live in their society.
Wedding clothes are about what Scottish people wear on wedding’s day. In Scotland the
bride wears a white gown dress as the most brides from the rest of European countries do.
Indeed, wearing a white dress is not the only choice a bride has in Scotland, but also she can
wear a blue dress as a traditional costume in Scotland (E.M.Budd. P,33.) Surprisingly, booth
colours have meaning which wearing a white or blue dress is a sign of wealth and cleanness of

the bride . Interestingly, the bride can not wear green or black dress for the wedding because
wearing green or black gowns “ It could anger the faery folk and black in may symbolized death
and mourning.” According to Budd, (E.M.Budd.2000. p 34.) On the anther hand, men in
Scotland wear a distinguished clothes which is considered as a traditional kilt that Scottish men
wear it for the celebration. Budd stated that, “ So, if you are the groom and you are getting
married in your kilt, consider yourself lucky indeed,”(E.M.Budd.2000. p 46.) The groom is really
luck to wear a Scottish kilt because that will distinguish him from the rest of his gusts. In brief,
people like to wear clothes that are related to their own culture.
people are social animals by nature, and they like to enjoy their happiness by gathering
around food table. wedding is one event that people serve food during the they celebration this
magical event. Furthermore, Scottish people always serve traditional food for their guests who
attend the marriage ceremony which allow them to eat a traditional dish called Haggis, but
before serving this dish you have to be sure all of your guests love it( Budd.2000). for Example,
Cock-a- leekie is a common food in this Northern country, and it is made of rice , onions, leeks
( Budd.2000). moreover, Scottish cuisine is rich in the kind of distinctive dishes the serve for
their guests. they do not serve just food, but also they give drink and cake. for example, in
Scottish marriage, guests will find a wedding cake which cuts for small slices for a reason. the
main purpose for cutting the wedding cake like that “ meant that the marriage would be fruitful,”
(Livingstone,1996.) furthermore, Scottish people serve drinks and alcohol for their guests.
Traditionally, the lovely couple cheers with Champagne due to practice the scots traditions. For
example, there are may different kinds of beverage drinks that provides in wedding celebration
such as wine, beer, gin , or vodka( Budd.2000.) Over all, providing food and drinks for the

people who attend the wedding ceremony, will give a great environment for wedding and
encourage the guests to stay longer in wedding place.
A marriage ceremony always goes through distinctive basic processes in Scotland. Of
course, the groom asks the bride’s hand from her father; then they start planning what they dress
on the wedding’s day as well as they discuss the celebration places with providing great amount
of different of food and drinks. Traditions of weddings are different from community to another
due to the society’s customs that they practice for a long time, and those traditions change
throughout time. To sum up, marriage is one of the best things that a person hope celebrating it in
the best way they could, so people will choose the best schedule for their marriage.
