Hurricane Sandy caused major damage along the East Coast of the United States in late October 2012, making landfall in New Jersey. The storm brought heavy rain, high winds, and a significant storm surge to New York and New Jersey, flooding neighborhoods and subway tunnels. Sandy resulted in at least 147 direct deaths across eight countries and caused $71.4 billion in damage, making it one of the most destructive hurricanes on record to affect the Northeastern United States.
