The power of local knowledge
Morocco, land of contrasts and wonders
Morocco is in many ways a country apart. It nestles on the northwestern tip of Africa, separated from the rest of the continent by the towering Atlas Mountains and by the
Sahara itself. Its climate, geography, and history are all more closely related to the Mediterranean than to the rest of Africa, and for this reason visitors are often struck by
the odd sensation of having not quite reached Africa in Morocco. In the north, its fine beaches, lush highland valleys, and evocative old cities reinforce this impression.
Morocco's varied geography includes no less than four separate mountain ranges, in addition to lush river valleys, beautiful sandy coasts, and wide expanses of desert.
The three most prominent mountain ranges, which run parallel to each other from the southwest to the northeast, are the Middle Atlas, the High Atlas, and the Anti-Atlas.
The ascent of the country's highest peak, Jebel Toukbal (13,665 ft./4,165 m.), is a spectacular and not particularly difficult High Atlas trek. The Moroccan coastline,
which fronts onto both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, offers plenty of great beaches as well as a number of fascinating old coastal cities. In the southeast, Morocco's
mountain ranges yield inexorably to the desolate expanse of the Sahara.
Marrakech the red exotic city
Marrakech is not only a fantastic city, it is also a symbol of the Morocco that once was, and which still survives here. Marrakech is a city unlike any other: nowhere is
exoticism better showcased than in this ochre-and-rose-hued North African hive of activity: the streets of the old and pink city have been too narrow to allow the
introduction of cars, and tourists searching for the "real" Morocco have turned the medieval structures of Marrakech into good business. The hordes of tourists that come
here all through the year have still not managed to change its character. Actually their high number contribute in a postive way to preserve one of the greatest monuments of
the Morocco that once was.
And the people of Marrakech love their city even more, and Moroccans all over the country would not let down an opportunity of visiting it.The most worthwhile tourist
traps are collected inside a rather small zone, starting in the north with the Souks, continuing through the town square of Jemaa lfna with its crowd of storytellers,
musicians...
Country information:
Morocco has been staunchly independent throughout its history
yet remained open to ideas, creating a heady mix of cultures,
religions and languages with ancient roots and a strikingly modern
outlook. The influence of Romans, Arabs and Europeans is
spotted in monuments throughout the country. Though you will
hear French spoken in city boulevards - a vestige of the 50-year
French Protectorate - a half-dozen Berber languages and
Moroccan Arabic are still widely spoken. Morocco is a unique
blend of the African Berber, Arab and Mediterranean.
For centuries travellers have crossed shifting sands and braved
mountain passes in search of mythic Morocco. They arrive
dazzled by its royal palaces, extraordinary oases and spectacular
feats of hospitality.

Le Jardin des epices - For lunch
Hidden away down a secluded Medina alleyway, Le Jardin brings a touch of French elegance and refinement to the bustle of the Marrakech old town. It is an oasis of peace within the chaotic
world of the Medina, and allows diners to experience the palatial charm of ancient Marrakech in peace and quiet. Located in a 17th-century mansion, Le Jardin is built around a large central
courtyard and features a beautiful combination of traditional Moroccan design and retro 1960s décor. It was started by Kamal Laftimi and interior designer Anne Favier, who discovered the
house in ruins and rebuilt it to suit their very distinctive tastes. They now describe it as a ‘place of culture’ in which guests can relax, enjoy film screenings and other special events, and feast on
the extensive menu of Moroccan classics and organic dishes.
Kasbah du Toubkal roof top terrace - For lunch
High above sea level, the Kasbah du Toubkal looks out over three major valleys carved from majestic rocky mountains rising to over 4,000 metres. Near the foot of the highest peak in North Africa, it's
only 40 miles from Marrakech, but the peace and quiet and seclusion are so complete the city seems a million miles away.
Lunch at Kasbah du Toubkal is a genuine Berber experience offering healthy, balanced diet.
Lunch is prepared with fresh local ingredients and traditional Berber methods.
Enjoy the breath taking snow capped Atlas Mountains and Berber villages as a backdrop while being served in low tables with cushions and low stools.
PS: No alcohol is sold in the Kasbah but we can arrange some wine and beer to be served for you.
Suggested social activities
Guided tour of the Souks & markets - Half day
Discover the secrets of the labyrinthine Souks of the old town. This is a maze of colourful alleys and small squares which are home to a bewildering array of stalls and ateliers,
devoted to specific
crafts where one can watch part of the production process. These spectacular souks possess an animation and vitality that set them apart from all others in Morocco: it covers a
surprisingly small area for such a large city, but as everything is so compact it makes them all the more enjoyable. Some of the most photogenic areas are the Dyer's Souk, where
skins and brightly coloured wool are hung out to dry, the Slipper Souk, where you can watch all kinds of sandals and shoes being made and where the smell of glue races up your
nostrils, and the inevitable Carpet Souk. One of the loudest places is the fascinating Blacksmith's Souk, where welders make sparks fly and the constant noise of banging and
clanging resonates through you.
As evening approaches, head to Jamaa El Fna, the city’s main square. No one really knows how it came into being, but over the years it has become the beating heart of Marrakech.
Here, fire eaters, mime artists, snake charmers and street musicians perform at every turn.

Marrakech discovery tour - Half day
Visit the most beautiful palaces and monuments in Marrakech including Bahia Palace: Built in the late 19th century, the name literally means 'brilliance' and
was intended to be the greatest Palace of its time. You will also visit the Saadian tombs, only recently discovered in 1917 and restored. The tombs have,
because of the beauty of their decoration, been a major attraction. Stroll through the labyrinth of narrow streets in the Medina and visit the famous Souks,
selling everything from leather to clothing to spices. Witness the astonishing spectacle of Djemaa El Fna Square. Used equally by locals and tourists, you will
find juice stalls, water sellers and snake charmers by day and dancing boys, storytellers and magicians by night. As darkness descends, the square fills with
food stalls. for visitors of Marrakech

Le Jardin desepices - For lunch Hidden away down a secluded Medina alleyway, Le Jardin brings a touch of French elegance and refinement to the bustle of the Marrakech old town. It is an oasis of peace within the chaotic world of the Medina, and allows diners to experience the palatial charm of ancient Marrakech in peace and quiet. Located in a 17th-century mansion, Le Jardin is built around a large central courtyard and features a beautiful combination of traditional Moroccan design and retro 1960s décor. It was started by Kamal Laftimi and interior designer Anne Favier, who discovered the house in ruins and rebuilt it to suit their very distinctive tastes. They now describe it as a ‘place of culture’ in which guests can relax, enjoy film screenings and other special events, and feast on the extensive menu of Moroccan classics and organic dishes.

Suggested social activities Guidedtour of the Souks & markets - Half day Discover the secrets of the labyrinthine Souks of the old town. This is a maze of colourful alleys and small squares which are home to a bewildering array of stalls and ateliers, devoted to specific crafts where one can watch part of the production process. These spectacular souks possess an animation and vitality that set them apart from all others in Morocco: it covers a surprisingly small area for such a large city, but as everything is so compact it makes them all the more enjoyable. Some of the most photogenic areas are the Dyer's Souk, where skins and brightly coloured wool are hung out to dry, the Slipper Souk, where you can watch all kinds of sandals and shoes being made and where the smell of glue races up your nostrils, and the inevitable Carpet Souk. One of the loudest places is the fascinating Blacksmith's Souk, where welders make sparks fly and the constant noise of banging and clanging resonates through you. As evening approaches, head to Jamaa El Fna, the city’s main square. No one really knows how it came into being, but over the years it has become the beating heart of Marrakech. Here, fire eaters, mime artists, snake charmers and street musicians perform at every turn.
