Vijayadashami is celebrated in India as the victory of good over evil. For Sai devotees, it is significant as the day Shirdi Sai Baba attained mahasamadhi in 1918. Years prior, Baba indicated this day would be his time to depart by dramatically removing his clothes and shouting whether he was Hindu or Muslim. He later told a devotee that another, Tatya, would pass on Vijayadashami 1918. However, on that day Baba himself passed away instead, giving his life for Tatya. Baba's samadhi mandir in Shirdi was built in 1917-1918 and houses his memorial, with an idol of him seated behind.
