Depuis quelques années, au niveau mondial, on observe une croissance de la mobilité de la main-d’œuvre professionnelle et le champ du travail social n’échappe pas à cette tendance. Ainsi, on note que de plus en plus de travailleurs sociaux ayant été formés à l’étranger s’établissent au Canada dans le but de poursuivre leur carrière professionnelle. Afin de pouvoir trouver un emploi, ces derniers doivent obtenir une reconnaissance d’équivalence de diplôme, un processus qui diffère d’une province à l’autre. Certaines provinces font appel à l’Association canadienne des travailleurs sociaux pour évaluer les demandes, pendant que d’autres gèrent les règlements de manière indépendante. C’est notamment le cas du Québec où l’Ordre des travailleurs sociaux et des thérapeutes conjugaux et familiaux du Québec (OTSTCFQ) a développé le Règlement sur les normes d’équivalence pour la délivrance d’un permis de travailleur social, balisant la reconnaissance des diplômes étrangers. L’instance traite annuellement une vingtaine de demandes d’accréditation venant de travailleurs sociaux diplômés à l’extérieur du pays (M. Pauzé, communication personnelle, 28 février 2013).
À ce jour, bien qu’il existe un bon nombre d’écrits relatant l’expérience d’autres professionnels immigrant au Canada (par exemple, les enseignants, les infirmières, les médecins), les recherches ciblant directement l’expérience des travailleurs sociaux immigrants se sont particulièrement rares. Or, bien que le travail social soit ancré dans des principes reconnus internationalement (International Federation of Social Workers, 2012), il n’en demeure pas moins que la profession est considérablement influencée par les contextes de pratique locaux (Mayer, 2002; Blewett et al.,2007; Horner, 2009). Dès lors, il devient pertinent de se questionner sur la transférabilité d’un pays à l’autre. Il est donc essentiel de mieux comprendre l’expérience de ces travailleurs sociaux internationaux, l’influence de leurs acquis ( par exemple, valeurs, études et expérience professionnelle) sur leurs interventions en travail social en terre d’accueil, ainsi que les défis et enjeux auxquels ils font face durant leur adaptation dans un nouveau contexte de pratique.
Cette présentation a pour but d’explorer l’expérience professionnelle de 20 travailleurs sociaux ayant immigré à Montréal au cours des 10 dernières années. La recherche présentée dans cette communication repose sur une méthodologie faisant appel à la théorisation ancrée.
