Abstract art is a form of visual art that does not attempt to represent or depict external reality, but instead uses colors, shapes, and textures to create a visual language of its own. The emphasis in abstract art is on the formal elements of art, such as line, color, and composition, rather than on representation of the world around us.
Abstract art emerged in the early 20th century as artists sought to move away from traditional forms of representation and create something new and original. It has since become a major movement in the art world, with many different styles and approaches to abstract art.
Some notable artists associated with abstract art include Wassily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, Piet Mondrian, and Jackson Pollock. The movement has also influenced other forms of art, such as music, literature, and architecture.
Today, abstract art continues to evolve and push the boundaries of what we consider art to be. It remains a vibrant and exciting field for artists and art enthusiasts alike.
Marianela Perez G. is an extraordinary visual artist. Marianela has developed her own voice in abstract painting and photography. This short essay is connected to the IKT (IKT - International association of curators of contemporary art) lecture presented in Siena in June 2001, titled "Anatomy of the Swiss Army Knife". This lecture addresses the do's and don't of art in the public realm, and the highly specific tools one needs to cope with the benevolent (or malevolent, for that matter) properties of the public realm in all its intricacies.
The world of search engine optimization (SEO) is buzzing with discussions after Google confirmed that around 2,500 leaked internal documents related to its Search feature are indeed authentic. The revelation has sparked significant concerns within the SEO community. The leaked documents were initially reported by SEO experts Rand Fishkin and Mike King, igniting widespread analysis and discourse. haos usually carries negative connotations. However, it can also be
a basis for creating new phenomena. For example, as it’s commonly
known, heat is the manifestation of molecular motion – the chaotic
colliding that transforms matter. Ryota Matsumo is one of the artists who
seeks to turn chaos into new order in his works.
The contemporary world is changing faster than ever
before. The hardly controlled chaos that evolves from
the countless streams of the various sensory informa-
tion, forces us to look for any “leading light” to orientate
our muddled perception toward. Our brain strives to
find familiar patterns in the disorder, and Ryota uses this
ability in digital drawing.
His compositions are produced at the meeting point of
traditional medias and digital art. The artist starts with a
hand-drawn draft, which is consequently constructed
using image CAD and 3D modelling. The partial results
are further transformed with acrylic, ink or scanned
images of found objects superimposed over them. On
the final stage, the images are processed using vari-
ous graphic software and plugins. This hybrid method
perfectly fits into the major tendencies of contemporary
culture, where artists have to balance between the
coldness of objectivity and subjective artistic manner.
Ryota’s pieces are defined by non-figurativeness and
accent on visuality, which makes them look close to the
abstract art. However, this similarity is formal. Wassily
Kandinsky, one of the pioneers of abstract painting,
wrote in his Concerning the Spiritual in Art, that “One of
the first steps in the turning away from material objects
into the realm of the abstract was, to use the technical
artistic term, the rejection of the third dimension, that is
to say, the attempt to keep a picture on a single plane.
Modelling was abandoned. In this way, the material
object was made more abstract…” And Ryota’s art is
grounded on the opposite principles: as a designer, he is
especially interested in spatio-temporal correlations that
are embodied into the multilayered effect of
his drawings.
Moreover, abstract art aims toward distancing from any
sphere of reality, approaching toward pure emotionality
of music, whereas Ryota refers to absolutely substantial
things – like, according to the author’s words, “dichoto-
my of organic and inorganic, structural and amorphous,
as well as microscopic objects and large structures.”
With the help of two-dimensional art, he forces his
way into the architecture, bridging up these two fields.
Knowledge of human optical perception allows him
to convert the chaos of forms into new expressive
artistic gestures.

nspired by the complexity and glory of urban landscape, works by Ryo-
ta Matsumoto form intricate visual solutions associating the initial point
with the philosophical background. They embody the spirits and va-
pours of the city, depicted through a combination of traditional and cyber
aesthetics, making the artist a contemporary 3D calligrapher.
Contemplation on the environment lies at the base of
Ryota’s creative process. The age we dwell in is witness-
ing the increase of interest and importance of ecological
issues, a trait that drove the artist toward further elab-
oration of ideas connected to nature and development
of cities. Fast urbanization and dynamic evolution of
modern cities impact our surroundings in multiple ways,
all of which are related to the space and time in which
they occur. All of these moments are entangled in visual
manifestations of Ryota’s pondering, resulting in brilliant
hybrid and multi-layered artwork. They are made to
serve as associative and permanent evidence to the
possible and expected changes in our perception of
the urban environment, and, consequently, society and
culture in the global sense.
The creative method Ryota employs testifies to his strat-
ified course of thinking. These artworks could be defined
as drawings executed in an experimental media, which
combines traditional ink, acrylic and graphite with digital
techniques, including algorithmic processing, scripting
and image compositing with specially made software.
This innovative approach reveals a lot about the art-
ist’s views on the contemporary urban development,
including his relationship with tradition and Japanese art
history, which he so skilfully integrates into his pieces.
Gestures are imminently reminiscent of Japanese cal-
ligraphy rendered in a completely unexpected manner.
The sense of three-dimensionality cannot be over-
looked, while the colours are rich, bold, clear and many;
standing for the initial artist’s fascination with the growth
of contemporary cities.
Titles of works further uncover the profundity of Ryo-
ta’s meditation on the subject. The spirits he sees are
“restless” and the events are “perpetual” while the
whole world resonates with the magnificence of “urban
landscapes and their inevitable decay and involution.”
The observer is instantly attracted and involved into the
everlasting movement produced by infinite lines and
twirls, tubes and smooth shapes. These yarns of life and
energy can be seen as symbols for the course of life,
whether it be a micro or macrocosm of a city.
Born in 1972, Ryota Matsumoto was raised in Hong
Kong and Japan. He received his Master of Architecture
degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2007 after
studying at the Architectural Association in London and
the Mackintosh School of Architecture, Glasgow School
of Art in early 90s. His artwork and architectural projects
are featured in numerous publications and exhibitions
internationally. Based in Tokyo, he runs an award-win-
ning design office Ryota Matsumoto Studio.
