Bierze swoje źródła we wzgórzach Wałdaj, potem w swym górnym biegu łączy ze sobą szereg małych jezior. Płynąc wśród wzgórz morenowych tworzy głęboką dolinę. W środkowym biegu płynie przez obniżenie Wyżyny Wschodnioeuropejskiej, początkowo w kierunku wschodnim, a potem południowym. Powyżej Wołgogradu oddziela się od Wołgi rzeka Achtuba, która płynie równolegle przez ok. 540 km, łącząc się z głównym nurtem licznymi odnogami i kanałami, w końcu uchodzi do jednego z ramion delty wołżańskiej.
