Romancing the Queen of the Adriatic Part 3
Posted by Elizabeth D’Costa on 14th, September 2012

Welcome back to part 3 on Romancing the Queen of the Adriatic. In part 2 we cover tips and places to Holidays In
Venice Italy
4. BRIDGE OF SIGHS
The bridge began construction in 1600 and was designed by Antonio Contino. It was supposed to connect the old
interrogation rooms in Doge’s Palace to the new prison situated across the river. This connection is one of the
reasons it gets its name. Prisoners who took their last breath of freedom were supposed to have sighed here on the
bridge that marked the final chapter in the lives of many.
The overwhelming beauty of the bridge and its architectural details also makes it a very romantic spot. It was believed
that if a couple kisses under the bridge, while drifting on a gondola below, they would enjoy eternal love. The lover’s
‘sigh’ is a probable origin of the bridge’s name. A tour through the Doge’s Palace includes the Bridge of Sighs.
5. EXPLORE THE ART AND MUSIC
Galleria Dell’ Accademia Some of the great Venetian paintings made between 14-18th century are housed here. It is
one of city’s largest museums holding a treasured collection of Venice’s art and culture. The Peggy Guggenheim
Collection is Italy’s most important museum dedicated to contemporary art.
It contains the most extensive 20th century art collection of Ms Guggenheim that includes the works of European and
American artists like Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, etc. Housed in Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, the museum was
opened in 1980 and has had many more works added to its collection since then. Ca’d’Ora was actually a
magnificent palazzo built in 1430 belonging to Marino Contarini.

It had a Venetian Gothic style of architecture with intricate detailing on the exteriors that included usage of gold,
ultramarine and vermilion; which is also why it gets its name, meaning ‘house of gold’. The house was destroyed and
underwent restoration until the last owner Baron Franchetti bequeathed the palazzo to the State of Venice.
Today the Ca’d’Ora is open to visitors as a museum containing most of the baron’s art collections including the works
of Titian, Giorgione and Tintoretto. Musica A Palazzo Situated in the Palazzo Barbarigo Minotto, this opera house
offers you a choice of three operas to view every day of the week.
The quaint opera rooms and a small audience of around 50, make it extremely personal. With complimentary wine
being served during intermissions and engaging singers with beautiful costumes, it forms an unforgettable experience
for both opera and music lovers.
The Venice Baroque Orchestra and the orchestra of Teatro La Fenice (Theatre of the Phoenix) are the best known in
the country. Apart from opera and ballet, La Fenice also holds at least two seasons of concert every year and is one
of the best known European opera houses. The Teatro Malibran also has its own chamber music season. Venice
Museums Pass Several museums can be visited on a pass that gives entry into 11 museums in the city including two
on Murano and Burano islands.
6. RIALTO BRIDGE
This was the only way across the Grand Canal on foot for almost 300 years. Built in 1591, the bridge was originally
made of wood and supported on boats. The bridge was rebuilt in 1264 and 1310; however, it was converted to a
wooden drawbridge after it collapsed during a boat race. In the 16th century, it was finally built with stone.
The Rialto Bridge is one of the famous and beautiful among the four bridges over the Grand Canal. It has two ramps
covered with a portico and has shops flanking both the sides. Stroll along the bridge to enjoy viewing and indulging in
the shops and the Rialto market.
7. SHOPPING
If you are looking to buy Venetian Masks, head to Ca’Macana where you can be assured of genuine stuff. Watch
them make masks from scratch. The children would love the history lesson that goes with it. Shopping in Venice is
expensive and the cheaper goods may not assure you of quality and genuineness.
The Venetian Emporium sells Venetian crafts, masks, jewellery and glass items with optimum prices. Vittorio
Costantini sells unique glass and original lamps. Attombri has a fine selection of jewelry and you get some fine lace at
Martinuzzi.
