Digisam is a part of Sweden's national strategy for digitization, digital access, and digital preservation of cultural heritage established in 2011. Its main tasks are to coordinate digital information management across collections, develop proposals for long-term digital preservation, and define roles and responsibilities for aggregating, accessing, and preserving digital cultural heritage. Digisam works with 24 central agencies and institutions to help them develop digitization plans and increase the amount of digitized material available within their existing budgets, with the overall goals of creating scalable solutions, building infrastructure, and empowering users.

This document summarizes the work of Digisam, a Swedish coordination secretariat for digital preservation. Digisam aims to 1) make recommendations for coordinated management of digital collections, 2) develop proposals for long-term digital preservation, and 3) define roles for aggregating, accessing, and preserving digital cultural heritage. It notes different types of digital information held by archives, libraries, and museums in Sweden and the need for common best practices and standards. A pilot study examined current digital preservation practices and identified a need for a common solution to manage all processes, given the large volumes of digital cultural heritage and lack of efficient long-term preservation currently.

This document summarizes the Dramawebben project, which created a corpus of Swedish drama texts annotated using TEI guidelines. It discusses the goals of engaging the humanities community and students in TEI encoding. Examples are provided of semantic annotations added, such as occupations and weaving, and automatic visualizations created, including character networks. Training materials and evaluation resources created through the project are also mentioned.
The document summarizes Sweden's national strategy for digitization of cultural heritage established in 2011. The strategy aims to coordinate efforts across 24 agencies and institutions to select, digitize, preserve and provide access to cultural heritage collections. It also establishes Digisam to coordinate this work and develop recommendations for aggregation, access, preservation and cost-effective solutions. Digisam will work with other organizations to develop semantic interoperability and infrastructure to make heritage collections more discoverable, linked and available for public use and research.

3. In November 2009, the Swedish Government initiated a work
process aiming at a national strategy for digitisation, online
accessibility and digital preservation.
All government cultural heritage institutions (archives,
libraries and museums) were assigned to give basic
information. Other cultural heritage institutions were also
invited to answer.
Background
4. Svaren visade tydligt…
• Avsaknad av men stark vilja till
samverkan och koordination…
• Vilja till verksamhetsutveckling och
domänöverskridande samverkan

12. Digitalisering
– Ett flertal områden kräver samordning, vissa
hanteras av Digisam
– Gemensamma standarder, prioritering samt
användbarhet och tillgänglighet centrala
frågor för att målen ska nås
13. Digitalt bevarande
– Ett samordnat digitalt bevarande (uppdrag till
Digisam att arbeta övergripande med frågor
om system för digitalt bevarande)
– Gemensamma och kostnadseffektiva
lösningar
– Gemensamma standarder för metadata
14. Digitalt tillgängliggörande
– Stark koppling till de kulturpolitiska målen
samt rådsslutsatserna
– Gemensamma lösningar krävs
– Centralmuseernas initiativ
17. Och vad kostar det…?
Forsknings- och utvecklingsbudgeten för
Joint Striker Fighter programmet är
drygt 40 miljarder €
100 miljarder € för att digitalisera samlingarna
i Europas arkiv, bibliotek och museer inkl AV
Att leverera 10 mil motorväg kostar 750 miljoner € -
Lika mycket som att digitalisera alla ljudsamlingar
på Europas kulturinstitutioner
29. • EU-samverkan
– Motiv:
• Kunskap (inte uppfinna hjulet på nytt)
• Nätverk
• Finansiering
• Draghjälp (följa och delta i projekt som arbetar
med frågor som ligger i linje med Digisams
uppdrag)
– Prioriterade aktiviteter:
– MSEG
– Europeana
– Projektdeltagande
– Öka de svenska kulturarvsinstitutionernas närvaro i EU-
samarbetet (mäkla kontakter)

the indivual agency´s operations and through
annual appropriations directives, ordinances and
special assignments
The Governement and the Public
Agencies
34. The Government agencies are the Governement
´s most important instrument in carrying out its
policies and their work is followed up by annual
reports and evaluations
It´s a quite substantial scope for steering the
operations of government agencies but the
government has no power to intervene in an
agency´s decision in specific matters relating to
the application of the law or the due exercise of
its authority.
And…
35. Agencies responsible for the
cultural heritage
A total of 24 agencies has assignments
concerning different perspectives of collecting,
preservation, digitisation and dissemination of
cultural heritage information and artefacts
38. Dom flesta svarar:
• Säker källa
• Lätt att använda…och återanvända
• I mitt arbetsflöde
Forskarna tillägger:
•Digital infrastruktur
•Kunna göra datauttag (ofta stora
och oredigerade) direkt från
databaserna
39. En utbyggd och fungerande digital
infrastruktur innebär att forskarna:
• kan lägga mindre tid på sökningar och
sammanställningar
• får mer tid för kvalitativ forskning
• kan formulera nya frågeställningar –data mining
• ökade möjligheter samverkan
• lättare kan överbrygga ämnesgränser och geografiska
avstånd

Enumerate is an EC-funded project.
The primary objective is to create a reliable
baseline of statistical data about digitization,
digital preservation and online access to cultural
heritage in Europe.
42. In early 2012 the ENUMERATE network carried
out a short Core Survey across Europe.
More than 2500 institutions from 29 European
countries participated in the survey and the
number of valid responses is close to 2000.
The Core Survey has gathered data about:
– The digitisation of collections
– The cost of digitisation efforts
– Access to digitised heritage collections
– The preservation of digital heritage materials
43. Some highlights of the findings
• c20% of all collections have been digitised and
• c57% still needs to be digitised (for 23% of
collections over all there is no need to digitise);
• More than 50% of cultural heritage institutions
collect born digital materials;
• c34% of institutions have a digitisation strategy;
45. Bevarandestrategi
(ENUMERATE)

organisation, describing the way the
organisation will be active in the
preservation of its digitised and born
digital collections.”

Men mycket återstår. Och ska informationen vara användbar och sömlös nu och i framtiden måste vi samverka brett inom alla moment av den digitala kedjan.
