Automated machines
What is an automated machine?
• An automated machine is a machine that
runs on a fixed set of rules(a program).
• There are many different types of automated
machines and they are used in a variety of
ways. In the photo there is an example of a
type of robot that can be used in a
warehouse.
• There are many types of automated machines
and they can do tasks ranging from
manufacturing a car to making a micro-
processer .
• Robots are used to do repetitive tasks ,and
tasks that are considered too dangerous to
be done by humans.
Care robots
Care robots are type of robot that are
becoming more and more frequent as they
can be used by a range of people, from the
elderly to small children with parents that
are busy working.
They can be used in care homes for the
elderly as they are more efficient compared
to humans and they do not make mistakes
unless there is an error in their programme.
At the moment care robots are only
experimental and aren’t used by anybody
specific but by people who volunteer to test
them.
Some people do not think that care robots
will ever be used in the real world. If the
programme is changed, they could be used
for military purposes.
Care robots
We can use care robots in many places as they are so versatile . Below is an example of a care robot.
Alfie:
This was a prototype robot that was made so that elderly people would not have to shift into care homes
at a early stage. It was made to help old people stay independent for longer and it helped the elderly by
giving reminders to take medication, locating lost objects around the home and enabling video chat with
family and friends. This way old people would not feel so lonely anymore and they would not forget to
take any medication.
Ideas
There are many ways care robots can be improved. Here are some ideas:
• They could have pre-made conversations with the people they are trying to help(this would help old
people when their family and friends are busy and they have no one to talk to).
• These robots could be made to look like humans and programmed to act like them(this would help
make the elderly feel less lonely as it would make them feel like there is someone there with them).
Humanoid Robots
Humanoid robots are robots that have been made to look like a human.
Currently they do not have a practical use but robotic engineers say
that you could imbed a AI(artificial intelligence) programme to make a
machine that can think for itself.
Humanoid robots could also be used as a EXO suit for the military as
they could control it like a drone and the fatality rates would be much
lower.
Humanoid robots are also experimental as there aren’t any uses for
them at the moment, however one day In the future we may have a
world in which having a humanoid robot is normal.
Humanoid robots
Humanoid robots are a type of robot that are not used so much at the moment but undoubtedly
will be used in the near future. Here is an example of an invention of a humanoid robot:
Atlas: This was a robot designed in 2013 and it capable of walking across uneven surfaces,
balance after being hit by a 20 kg weight and even when it was knocked over it got back up. It
was able to lift 10 kg weights and it was able to run on a treadmill. Atlas also had several
attachments including a disc pad to lift weights with and a pair of extra legs.
Ideas
• We could add fire extinguishers that could reduce the amount of firemen that die each year.
• We could add a radio receiver and connect it to a control panel so you could look through the
robots eyes as if they were yours. This would increase the versatility of the robot and it
could be used in many more situations.
Robot chefs are very practical. They
don’t look like what you would expect
as they don’t look like a human at all.
They are very efficient but they are not
used at the moment in an average
household at the moment as they will
start being sold for the average kitchen
in early 2018.
These robots will be able to cook food
perfectly and efficiently and they even
clean up after cooking. They use several
motors that are built in to cook food.
They can be used everyday as they
come with pre set dishes that they can
cook.
Robot chef
Robot chefs
Chef robots are a very new idea and there are only a few types of chef
robots that will be available for the average house-hold. Here is an
example of a chef robot:
Moley: This is an example of a chef robot that will be available in the near
future for the average household. It will be coming out in early 2018 and
will cook a meal as well as clean up afterwards. It was originally made in
2015 and it won the consumer electronics show. It will be able to search
through different cuisines and you can upload your own food so that other
people can try it as well. The place where you search for food from will be
iTunes styled.
Biomechanics• Biomechanics is the study of different parts of
animals and the human body in which the
mechanical parts of humans and animals
are researched.
•
• Biomechanics is mostly used in the structure of
a humanoid robots. You can also use
biomechanics to structure robots so that
they have the abilities of an animal that is
able to jump very fast or run on water.
•
• Due to biomechanics, robots have structure’s
that are similar to animals.
• Many people have had the idea of putting
together the abilities of certain animals to
make a perfect, all terrain robot that can
be used in any situation.
• This ‘super robot’ could be used by the
military, the fire service and the police.
• Research has been done to try and see which
animal traits fit together so this robot can
become reality but ,currently, tests have
been inconclusive.
Biomechanics
In biomechanics there have been many inventions. These usually involve
merging
together some form of mechanics so that it can work side by side with the
human body.
The walking assistant: This was a robot design that was made to help
people with walking disabilities. It was made in 2015 and it was designed
to be worn just like trousers. It has helped many people who used it as it
was able to give feedback about the way that you were walking and what
was wrong with the position or shape of the legs.
Robots in space
Robots have been used in space for over 50 years.
The first robot in space, Sputnik 1, was a Russian
robot. It taught us about the ionosphere(a layer of
the atmosphere). This was a pioneering robot and it
ultimately resulted in the great increase of space
robots.
These robots can be used to collect samples of
rocks on hostile environments, explore terrain that
is inaccessible to humans and even repair damage
that may have affected rockets or space shuttles.
These robots accompany certain missions as
scientists need robots to scout the environment and
check for any obstacles or problems that that may
need to be attended to.
Space robots
Robots have been used in space for a variety of reasons. Space robots are a type of robot that
are so versatile they can even be used on earth by explorers who want to go near a active
volcano or travel through an impenetrable jungle. Recently humanoid robots have started
being used by Nasa.
Robonaut 2(R2):This is a robot that, in 2014,won the NASA Government Invention of the
Year award and was used in space. This robots capabilities range from being able to take of
its hand to use as robotic glove and a robotic exoskeleton to being able to use it for
telemedicine(Remotely diagnosing and curing illnesses with the use of telecommunication).
Ideas
• We could sent humanoid robots that are being controlled by humans onto planets that
are too hostile for humans or to far away from humans.
• Robots could be made to help humans do work, such as collect small samples of material
and then come back to the space station to be researched which would mean there
would be less need for manned space missions on the moon and other planets.
