Discover our innovative
risk management tool, designed to raise
awareness, increase understanding, create
buy-in and generate action in your organisation.
What it delivers…
Using a simulation approach, Risk Manager™
is an interactive and easy way
of bringing to life:
• The link between effective risk management and improved business
performance
•	The consequences of not taking an integrated approach to risk management at
a site or business unit level
• The value of proactive risk and control management
• The short and long term impacts of risk
As a result, participants learn:
•	The importance of taking into account ALL risks when managing an operation
•	That the choices and decisions they make in managing risk have a direct
impact on performance
•	The benefits of using a 5x5 matrix when assessing critical risk
•	A more holistic and cohesive approach to risk management

Risk
Manager™
is…
A board-based
simulation which:
•	Reflects the decisions and
choices that need to be
made to effectively manage
critical business risks.
•	Enables management teams to
experience what
taking an integrated approach
to managing risk
means in practice.
•	Raises awareness of the
opportunities that managing
the business through a risk
management ‘lens’ delivers
e.g. competitive advantage,
sustainability.
Target audiences...
Managers and supervisors
working at a site level to
understand how to proactively
manage risk in their part
of the organisation.
Managers at a business
unit level to understand the
‘big picture’ of how risk is
managed in the organisation.
“We have seen a significant
uptake in managers
implementing our Group
Standards on Integrated Risk
Management as this simulation
has given them a much better
understanding of the very
real consequences of not
managing their risks well.”

gas industry (downstream) and the mining industry,
and is available in site or business unit versions.
The learning process…
In Risk Manager™
, participants are tasked with advising a business on how to improve performance through
improving the management of critical risks. Using a board-based simulation, participants work together in teams of 3-4
to discuss issues, complete activities and identify actions.
1. Assess risks
and prioritise
Participants are given
information about a fictitious
organisation to enable them
to assess potential risks.
They must then review and
assess a range of specific
risks and opportunities and
prioritise which to act on
now and which to leave till
later, using a 5x5 matrix and
limited available resources.
2. Review impact on
performance
Participants review their
choices and discover what
impact (positive or negative)
they have on key areas of
the business.
Participants must improve
performance across all
areas to succeed.
3. Wild cards
Wild cards are introduced
which further impact
performance in different
areas depending on which
risks were prioritised.
This highlights the need for
participants to consider
both the short and long term
impact of their decisions.
4. Review and apply
to their organisation
Participants evaluate their
performance and discuss
the key learning points.
They then have the
opportunity to identify critical
risks in their organisation,
assess the consequences
of not mitigating those
risks, identify potential
opportunities and prioritise
which to act on.
