PROJECT SUMMARY
All electrical equipments are designed with an insulation system for optimal operation of the
system and safety of the operating personnel. There are three types of insulation systems-
Solid, Liquid and Gaseous insulation. The failure of the insulation system can be due to
various factors like prolonged operation under conditions of very high temperature and
electric field stress. In high voltage systems, liquid dielectrics are more preferred because of
its higher density than gases and hence possess much higher dielectric strength of the order of
10^7 V/cm. Any degradation in the insulation system can be identified by measuring and
analyzing partial discharge. In this project the oil insulation has been subjected to different
level of non-uniform electrical stress conditions using single and multiple sources of
discharges. The non-uniform field is created using needle-plane electrode configurations.
Simulation study has also been performed using Quick-Field software package to assess the
variation of electrical strength under the influence of both discharge sources.
