RESPONSE, FROM PAGE 4
• Clarify your own priori-
ties – Explain what else is on
your plate and why it’s
important.
Other people may not real-
ize what your priorities really
are and won’t press the ques-
tion once they understand
the scope of your other
responsibilities.
• Adjust your work flow –
If your boss wants you to do
something extra, use the
request as an opportunity to
shift your other projects.
“I can do that, but my
report on the Jones Project
will be late – is that okay?”
This shows you’re thinking
about priorities, and it may
make your boss rethink his
assumptions about your
workload.
• Don’t say anything when
you’re put on the spot – Take
time to think it over.
• Be polite, but firm –
Don’t build false hope about
what you can do.
Don’t say,“I’ll try.”
You’ll just worry about
squeezing the request into
your schedule or how you’re
going to say in the end that
you didn’t get it done.
Let me just add, from a
management perspective, I
love when people are willing
to take on extra tasks when
necessary. I do not love when
their work is substandard or
their usual responsibilities
suffer, just to prove how
many balls they can juggle at
one time. That tells me they
are weak on time manage-
ment.
• Saying no is not the
same as saying never – It’s an
acknowledgement that you
respect yourself as well as the
person doing the asking.
Believe me, it won’t stop
them from asking again.
Mackay’s Moral: Know
when to say no.

tacted via e-mail at harvey@mack-
ay.com, online at www.harvey-

RETURN, FROM PAGE 4
Walking around my
hometown and working
at the Redwood
Gazette has given me
the opportunity to
reconnect with people
from the past as well as
meeting new people.
It’s been a pleasant
experience being back
in the community.
It’s amazing how
time can change peo-
ple, attitudes and most
surprisingly oneself.
Seeing familiar faces
and being around
pleasant people has
been an added bonus to
my own personal
growth of learning to
appreciate the “little
things.”
I’ve learned we all
have a story, and it’s
important to under-
stand that we never
truly know what others
may be going through.
We are all individu-
als despite our last
names, and we should
never allow others to
dictate our thoughts,
feelings and path.
What I’ve learned in
these past few months
is one should never say
never, and don’t be
surprised if you return
home.
After all, I did, and
I’m pleasantly sur-
prised almost every day
what I learn about
myself and our com-
munity.
PROGRAM, FROM PAGE 9
How does one benefit
from the SELF Refi program?
The competitive rates
offered through the SELF
Refi program can help some
students locked into higher
rate private loans not only
reduce their monthly pay-
ments but also lower their
overall debt. Some borrowers
may also see the SELF Refi
program as a way to shorten
the duration of their student
loans or extend them over a
longer period of time, which
is also going to reduce their
monthly payments.
For eligible borrowers
five-, 10- and 15-year loans
will be available, with cur-
rent interest rates ranging
from 3 percent for a five-year
variable to 6.95 percent for a
15-year fixed rate.
For example, if eligible for
the lowest rates, a borrower
with $40,000 in student
loans at 8 percent interest
rate could save as much as
$200 a month, or up to
$25,000 over the duration of
their loan through the SELF
Refi program.
More information on the
SELF Refi program, and how
to refinance your student
loans through this new ini-
tiative, is available at
www.selfrefi.state.mn.us.
