During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims around the world fast from food, drink, and other physical needs during daylight hours. Fasting is meant to purify the soul, focus attention on God, and practice self-sacrifice. It is more than just not eating and drinking. Muslims are called on to use this month to re-evaluate their lives according to Islamic guidance, make peace with others, strengthen family and friend ties, and abandon bad habits. The Arabic word for fasting literally means "to refrain" from food and drink as well as evil actions, thoughts, and words.
