The document evaluates the performance of the IEEE 802.22 wireless regional area network (WRAN) physical layer, which utilizes cognitive radio techniques to efficiently use TV broadcast frequency bands while preventing interference. Various modulation schemes (QPSK, 16-QAM, 64-QAM) and coding rates are analyzed through simulations to determine their effect on bit error rates in a Rician channel. The findings indicate that convolution coding significantly enhances performance, especially at lower code rates.
