"I'll stay with Kath. If we're splitting, then I'm staying
with Kath." - Tommy, page 165

After some heated exchanges, Rodney and Chrissie try to convince the
others to visit their friend Martin. Kathy says that she doesn't want to,
and Ruth takes a gibe at her, speaking patronizingly to her friend. Kathy
asserts that she wants to stay put, and when the others turn to leave
her, Tommy speaks up, telling them that he'll keep Kathy company.
Through Tommy's line, Ishiguro continues to hint, but not explicitly
state, that the two harbor romantic feelings for one another. As readers,
we wonder if Tommy chose to stay with Kathy rather than go with Ruth
simply because he feels sorry and doesn't want her to be alone, or if
there is something deeper associated with this.
Quotations
“We all know it. We’re modelled from trash. Junkies, prostitutes, winos,
tramps. Convicts, maybe, just so long as they aren’t psychos. That’s what
we come from. We all know it, so why don’t we say it?” - Ruth, page 164

Ruth says this angrily after discovering that the possible 'possible' wasn't
much like her after all. Ishiguro uses the clones' origins as an opportunity
to explore self-discovery and free will, because they think that they can
"gather insight" to who they might be by looking at who they were modeled
after. This information to the reader, which shows that perhaps the clones
have known all of this subconsciously after all, proves that the clones are
in fact based on the undesirable. We discover that the clones in this story
aren't actually based off rich people who want genetically similar organs in
their clones, but rather after those who are deemed of lower stature,
perhaps because of the taboo of cloning itself.
