Question 4
Who would your target audience be for your media product?
Introduction
When making our media product, we had to consider certain factors
including who our target audience was going to be. We did not want to leave
any specific group out so we decided that males and females would both be
considered within our product as our primary and secondary audience.
With help from the UK Film Council Data we found out about our target
audience and what they like to see which helped us to establish what to put
into our media product.
Primary/Secondary Target Audience
We have found that our primary target audience is females under 35,
usually parents and mainly middle class. We found this information from
the UK Film Council data. The data shows that 44% of women under 35
enjoy watching horror films meaning that they are our main target
audience.
Our secondary target audience is males under 35, the UK Film Council data
shows that 36% of males under the age of 35 enjoy watching Horror films.
Therefore, this is our secondary target audience.
Here we can see that 32%
of the 1,978 people asked
enjoy watching horror
more than any other genre.
From this we can see who likes to watch horror films
the most (females under 35) and what social class
they’re in and whether they’re parents or not. This is
useful because it helps us to determine what to
include in our product.
From this evidence we can see a pattern emerging. It is usually younger people
who enjoy watching horror films. Also the percentage of men and women who
enjoy watching horror films is very close so it was very easy for us to include
things that both genders will want to watch.
The social class for both our target audiences would be any because according
to the UK Film Council Data there is not much difference between the two
genders and also this means that we can market our film to all social classes
and get a bigger audience at the end of it because we aren't targeting specific
groups of people since it would make our film more niche.
As a group, we think that our media product follows the generic horror
conventions and we believe our target audience will enjoy our media
product because it is not aimed at any specific gender because our primary
and secondary target audience includes both males and females.
We originally thought that the primary target audience would be males
under 35 rather than females so we were shocked at first. But I think that
having the primary target audience as predominantly females under 35 was
an advantage because our group was the same as our target audience which
made it easier for us to add things in our target audience would like because
our group fit the demographics. We chose this target audience because of
the evidence suggested by the UK Film Council Data and also because our
target audience will be mainly people our age and we can associate with
them more than we could with people over 35 for example. I think that this
is another advantage that our target audience was under 35, we know what
people our age want to see and what they don't want to see (with help from
the Target Audience Interviews) which puts us ahead.
Our BBFC classification was a 15. This is because if you're under 15 you cannot
watch our media product because it would be too scary but there is nothing in
it that would make it an 18 so we left it at a 15. The fact that we chose a 15
means that our target audience will be very large because anyone from the age
of 15 can watch it and also since our target audience is under 35 it fits perfectly.
We gave our film an age rating of 15 because it contains violence, threat and a
general theme of horror and strong language. These may offend some viewers
meaning the age restriction has to be appropriate to the content. We decided to
keep it at a 15 because there is no drug use, hate speech, imitable behaviour or
explicit gore. We feel that a 15 age rating is a suitable boundary for our film as it
is often the case for films of a similar genre.
I think our film would most likely be released in a big multiplex cinema
because our audience isn’t very specific and is very general. This means that
more people would watch our film because it is in a bigger cinema
This person fits our demographic because they are under
35 and also male. This helped us to determine what to
put into our film and helped us to understand where and
when we are going to show this media product and where
we were going to market it.
The impact these findings will have on our film opening is
that we could incorporate some of the ideas our ideal
demographic gave. For example, we could add music that
our target audience like to make them want to watch the
film more. Also, for the casting of our characters we could
watch films with the actors our demographic likes and
then try and find actors that are like them/act like them
to entice our target audience. If we do things that our
target audience would like then they are more likely to
watch our film.
From this interview, I can establish what the target
audience wants to see and finds interesting and this helps
me to get a better view of what people like to see/do. This
will help me to make a good opening for my film.
