Lt. James Hampson was on duty as a watch officer aboard the British aircraft carrier Ark Royal in Gibraltar Bay when it was bombed by Italian aircraft. Six bombs hit the carrier within 60 seconds, blowing holes in the flight deck and hangar deck. While the hangar was packed with empty aircraft rather than fueled planes and bombs, the explosions caused fatal damage below the waterline. Within 20 minutes, the captain ordered the ship abandoned as it took on water too quickly for the pumps to handle. The Ark Royal slipped beneath the surface, taking Lt. Hampson down with it. Of the over 1,600 crew, 427 survived by being rescued from the water or swimming the two miles to shore.

Radical Changes
Martin Burch reflects on how his hobbies of sailing and painting evolved into full-fledged professions over 20 years. While his early work featured familiar themes, in 2011 he experienced a creative resurgence marked by bold new styles and techniques. His paintings from this period drew from vivid memories of islands around the world, combining familiar sights with political commentary. Though no longer actively sailing, his heart remains connected to distant seascapes that still inspire his work.
