Lo studio esamina il contributo del capitale umano, misurato come la quota dei residenti con un diploma universitario, alla crescita delle città italiane, misurata attraverso due proxy: popolazione e occupazione. Tra il 1981 e il 2001 le città a più alto livello di capitale umano, sono cresciute maggiormente rispetto alle altre. Una quota d’istruzione più elevata è associata con un tasso di crescita dell’occupazione in un intervallo dello 0,9-2,3 per cento. Questi risultati si manifestano sia a livello di mercato locale del lavoro (SLL) che a livello comunale; risultano robusti ad un ampia insieme di controlli sulle caratteristiche locali, ma non vengono rilevati considerando la popolazione residente come variabile di crescita. L’utilizzo di un indicatore d’istruzione risalente al 1931 come variabile strumentale per il capitale umano conferma i risultati. Non sono stati rilevati effetti eterogenei tra le macro-aree.I meccanismi attraverso cui il livello d’istruzione influisce sulla crescita urbana derivano da due categorie di esternalità. In primo luogo, il capitale umano stimola la produttività, generando crescita salariale e occupazionale (canale produttività). In secondo luogo, aree urbane con residenti più istruiti potrebbero influire positivamente sulla qualità della vita (canale amenità). Riferendoci all’approccio di Roback (1982) e Shapiro (2006), stimiamo che il contributo del capitale umano alla crescita a livello di SLL sia per la quasi totalità attribuibile al canale produttività mentre, a livello comunale, il canale legato alle esternalità può contribuire a spiegare una quota non trascurabile del fenomeno.
