Theresa Ann Campo Pearson was born on March 21, 1992 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with anencephaly, a birth defect where she was born without a complete brain or skull. Her parents sought to declare her brain-dead to donate her organs but courts rejected their appeals. Theresa died nine days after birth when her organs had deteriorated too much for transplant. Anencephaly occurs in about 1 in 1,000 pregnancies and babies born with this condition typically only live a few hours or days at most.
