Our film will be an independent production
horror. To make our production more challenging
for our secondary audience, we have decided to
make it challenging by having the protagonist a
male and the antagonist a female. This goes
against the stereotype of females being weak, as
usually females would be the ones being
victimised by the supernatural events.
This opening shot starts with a couple holding
hands and walking, there is a quick cut to the male
going to a funeral and washing his face in his
bathroom. We then use a shot reverse shot from
the man to the shower turning on and then back to
a the mirror which has a written message on it,
Saying ‘I will never forgive you’
We are thinking that the best production company
to use is Twisted pictures which have produced
many films such as:
 Saw (2004)
 Saw 2 (2005)
 Saw3 (2006)
 The Tortured (2009)
All these films have generated a successful gross in
the box office which shows to us that they are an
excellent production company.
We have chosen for our distribution company to be
Studio Canal, this is because they have distributed
many different horrors which have mad lots and lots
of sales. They have distributed such films such as:
 Train to Busan (2016)
We have chosen this company as they focus on a lot
of independent company's and will know what is best
in making our production the best it can be.
From our research into independent horrors we
have learnt that many independent horrors
challenge the audience as they go against a lot of
the theory's and stereotypes. But as we have two
audiences we have to include parts that a mass
market audience can appeal too and also ways
that the niche audience can appeal too. We
noticed that to make a good opening sequence
that will catch peoples eyes. When looking at
different opening sequences we can see that
music is a key part for the production as it gives
climax to the opening. The music is key part…
… in making an opening sequence. We are going
music which is very high pitch music which will
keep the audience on the edge of their seat. From
looking at the horror genre we have learnt that
many different conventions that make up the
horror genre, these are things like low key
lighting which has many different connotations.
We have also looked at the music that would fit
best into an independent horror film, we learnt
that the music that will fit best would be high
pitch with a heavy beat to show how face the time
can slip away from you.
When looking at the theoretical research we can
see that most independent horrors share many
different conventions, the main conventions that
we noticed is in a lot off horrors that they all have
low key lighting. We will apply this into our film
throughout the depressing scenes such as the
funeral and the bathroom when the protagonist
comes back from the funeral. Overall we are
focusing more on creating a clear genre to our
audience as this would be clearer to do to the
audience and they would understand this more.
We have chosen to have two types of audiences
this is because we are an independent company
producing an independent film. We are attracting
the niche audience and also the mass market.
Mass Market audience
Class: C2-E
Race: white British
Age: 15-25
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Straight
This is or first audience that we are appealing too. We
are appealing to the mass market as we are making a
horror film and the mass market like the horror
genre, this is because they are young and like to get a
visual pleasure from this.
Niche audience
Class: A-C1
Race: White British
Age: 30-40
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Straight
We have chosen to aim towards the niche audience as
well as the mass market audience we have chosen to
do this as we can maximise who we appeal too. We
are also an independent company which challenges
many stereotypes.
