The earliest mechanical pencil dates back to 1791 when one was found aboard the sunken HMS Pandora. The first patent for a refillable mechanical pencil was granted in 1822. Spring-loaded and twist-feed mechanisms were later introduced in 1877 and 1895, respectively. The mechanical pencil became popular in Japan in 1915 due to improvements by Tokuji Hayakawa and was introduced as the Ever-Ready Sharp Pencil, around the same time that Charles Keeran was developing a similar pencil in America.
