Producers:
The producer’s job is essential for making sure the film is successful. The producer’s job is to see the
film through and develop the film. They have to raise the money for the film, get the main idea right
so that the film is a success. They also have to focus on getting ‘the package’. They have to plan how
they are going to make the film and hire the cast and director. Hiring the right cast is essential so
that it gives the correct feel of the film and makes sure that the film is portrayed correctly. Then they
have to attract investors who will invest money into the creation of the film.
To attract investor’s producers have to find people who want to invest into the film. For example
British producers can go to television companies, the regional film fund or a group of potential
financiers. However most British producers have to go overseas to find investors. For example they
may make a co-production deal when they team up with another producer from a foreign country.
However this does make the production harder as no-one fully owns the film so it is hard to make
decisions. Finding investors for films is a very hard job but some producers simply have to convince
people why they should be a part of making the film.
The producer also has to break down the script to figure out which will be the hardest scenes to
film, and they work closely with the cinematographer who helps to decide the overall impression of
the film; like their right hand man. The producer also has to manage the budget, and create a
finance plan. They break down the budget into sections and use this to work out the budget of the
film. For example they split it into above the line costs; creative talent eg: Script writers, producer
and their team, the director and their team, the major actors and the script. They also split it into
below the line costs; the more creative side. For example, costume, photography, location, makeup
and how they schedule the film all together. These are all the ways that the producer can split up the
costs in order to work out the budget of the film.
