• Introduction
 Agriculture is the backbone of Indian economy. Agriculture is the most
important occupation for most of Indian families.
 In India, agriculture contribute about 16% of total GDP &10% of total exports.
 That reason India secured second position into worldwide in term of farm
output, about 75% people are living in rural areas and are still dependent on
Agriculture.
 About 43% of geographical area is used for agricultural agricultural activities.
Role of Agriculture on Indian economy
 Agriculture plays a vital role in the Indian economy. Over 70 per cent of the
rural households depend on agriculture.
 From the very beginning, agriculture is contributing a major portion to our
national income. In 1950-51, agriculture and allied activities contributed
about 59 per cent of the total national income.
 Agriculture is the only major source of food supply as it is providing regular
supply of food to such a huge size of population of our country. It has been
estimated that about 60 per cent of household consumption is met by
agricultural products.
Basic Facts about Agriculture
 India is the biggest exporter of cotton in the world.
 India is the largest producer of ginger, okra, potatoes, onions, brinjal, etc.,
amongst vegetables.
 Sikkim is the first state in the world that claimed 100% organic farming.
 India ranks 2nd in the world in agriculture production.
 India’s world rank in services and industry sector is 9th and 5th respectively.
 And so many other facts about the agricultural production.
