Joseph Stalin was born in Gori, Georgia in 1879. He was one of five children, but the other four died and he was expected to die from smallpox at age seven, but survived. Stalin grew up facing unjust treatment and rude comments due to his disfigured face and arm from surviving smallpox, which led him to desire respect and dignity through achieving greatness.
