Nonprofit Hoboken Bookstore Supports 
Growth of Literacy and Arts 
 David Roberts, former mayor of Hoboken, New Jersey, has been a 
benefactor and supporter of the city’s Symposia Community Bookstore. 
Unlike traditional bookstores, Symposia is a nonprofit thrift shop that opens 
up its location for use by the community. By supporting Symposia, David 
Roberts is strengthening literacy and the arts in Hoboken.

Growth of Literacy and Arts 
 Symposia is the only venue that deals used books in the city of Hoboken. 
Along with enjoying competitive prices on used books , wireless Internet 
access, and meeting space, residents can enjoy a range of activities 
hosted by the bookstore, including yoga classes and guitar circles. Patrons 
can also rent out the facility, which can accommodate approximately 20 
guests and also features audio-visual equipment and a large screen, to 
host meetings, art exhibits, concerts, parties, and more.

Growth of Literacy and Arts 
 Members of the local community support Symposia through financial 
contributions and volunteer work. The store also accepts book donations 
from community members. As a direct result of the generosity of Hoboken 
residents, Symposia continues to pursue its mission of making books 
accessible to a broad audience and providing valuable space for 
community activities.
