INTRODUCTION
■ Poliomyelitis commonly shorted to polio is
an infectious disease caused by polio virus
in about 0.5% of cases it move from the gut
to affect the central nervous system and
there is muscle weakness resulting in
flaccid paralysis.

POLIO PROGRAMME
■ With the Global initiative of eradication of Polio in 1988
following World Health assembly resolution in 1988
pulse polio immunization program was launched in India
in 1995.
■ Children in the age group of 025 years administer Polio
drops during National and sub National immunization
rounds ( in high risk area every year) . About 172 million
childrens are immunized during the each National
immunization Day (NID)
OBJECTIVES
1. Achieve hundred percent coverage under oral polio
vaccine program.
2. To immunize children through improved social
mobilization ,plan moP-up operation in areas where
polio virus has almost disappeared and maintain high
level of moral among the public.
3. To interrupt the transmission of the wild polio virus as
soon as possible.
4. To contribute to health system development and
strengthen routine immunization and surveillance for
communicable diseases.
PROGRESS
■ South east asia region of who including India has
been certified polio free by “The regional
certification Commission”(RCC) on 27th March 2014.
■ India reported its last polio case from district
Howrah, West Bengal.
■ WHO on 24th February 2012 remove India from the
list of “endemic countries with active polio virus
transmission”.
■ There are 24 lakh vaccinator and 1.5 Lakh
supervisor involved in the successful
implementation of pulse polio program.
■ The total number of cases and number of
affected district during pass 7 years as
below.

STEPS TAKEN BY GOVERNMENT TO
MAINTAIN POLIO FREE STATUS IN
INDIA
1. Maintaining community immunity through high quality
National and sub National polio round each year.
2. An extremely high level of vigilance through surveillance
across the country for any impotation or circulation of
polio virus and VDPV is being maintained.
3. Environmental surveillance sewage sampling have been
established to detect transmission and as a surrogate
indicator of the progress as well for any programmatic
interventions strategically in Mumbai, Delhi , Patna,
Kolkata and Gujarat.
4. All state and union territories in the country have
developed a rapid response team (RRT)to respond to any
polio outbreak in the country.
5.An emergency preparedness and response plan(EPRP)
has also been developed by all state indicating steps to be
undertaken in case of detection of a polio case.
6. To reduce risk of impotation from neighbouring
countries, International border vaccination is being
provided through continuous vaccination team to all
eligible children around the clock. These are
provided through special booths setup at
International border that India share with Pakistan,
Bangladesh, Bhutan Nepal and Manyavar. 7.8 million
childrens have been vaccinated with OPV as on 31st
August 2015.
7. Government of India has issued guidelines
effective sense March 2014 for mandatory
requirement of polio vaccination to all
International Travellers for travel to India and
other affected countries namely Afghanistan.
Nigeria Pakistan and Cameroon.
8. National technical advisory group on
immunization (NTAGI) Has recommended
injectable polio vaccine introduction as an
additional dose along with third those of DPT in
the entire country in the last quarter of 2015 as a
part of polio Endgame strategy.
INDIA TO INTRODUCE INJECTABLE
INACTIVATED POLIOVIRUS VACCINE
(IPV)
■ In May 2012, The World Health assembly endorse
the polioradication and endgame strategic plan
2013-2018 ,calling on countrys to strengthen to
strength routine immunization programmes and
introduce at least one dose of injectable in
activated polio vaccine IPV in all countries using
oral polio vaccine OPV.
■ India joins 125 other countries to introduce
in activated polio virus vaccine into routine
immunization as a part of polio eradication
and endgame strategic plan in 2015. IPV
would be given a long with third those of
oral polio vaccine at 14 weeks of age for
children under 1 year of age.
