Anemia can be caused by several diseases that affect red blood cells and their ability to transport oxygen. These include blood loss, decreased red blood cell production, and abnormal red blood cells that do not function properly or survive as long as healthy cells. Certain genetic disorders and infections can also contribute to anemia.
