3. The role of Sflt1 and Plfg
• Sflt1
• Soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (Sflt1) is a protein that can disrupt the
normal function of placental growth factor (PlGF), a key regulator of
angiogenesis.
• PlGF
• PlGF is a pro-angiogenic factor that promotes the growth and development
of blood vessels. Imbalances in the levels of Sflt1 and PlGF are believed to
contribute to the development of preeclampsia.
• Ratio
• The Sflt1/PlGF ratio reflects the balance between these two factors and can
be used to assess the risk of preeclampsia in pregnant women.

4. Calculation
• To calculate the sFlt1/PlGF ratio, you need to know the
concentrations of sFlt1 and PlGF in maternal blood.
• Determine the concentration of sFlt1 (in whatever units are
provided, such as pg/mL or ng/L).
• Determine the concentration of PlGF (in the same units).
• Divide the concentration of sFlt1 by the concentration of PlGF.
• For example, if the concentration of sFlt1 is 1000 pg/mL and the
concentration of PlGF is 200 pg/mL:
• sFlt1/PlGF ratio = 1000 pg/mL / 200 pg/mL = 5
• So, in this example, the sFlt1/PlGF ratio would be 5.
