Proteinuria is a medical condition defined by an excess of protein in the urine. It can be caused by kidney disease which damages the kidney's ability to filter out protein from the blood. Left untreated, proteinuria can progress to serious kidney damage and even kidney failure over time if the underlying cause is not addressed.
