Ta – The One-Sound Rhythm
The words cup, glass, milk, and rice. The one-sound
rhythm gets 1 beat. A stick notation is used to show
the one–sound rhythm. Clap the stick notation and
say the syllable “ta”.

Ti – ti – The Two–Sound Rhythm
The words table, kitchen, and saucer
have two-sound rhythms. Two short
sounds can take the place of one steady
beat. Two vertical lines connected by a
horizontal line represent two-sound
rhythms. You say “ti-ti” for this rhythm.

When you put together one-sound, two-
sound rhythms, and silence, you create
rhythmic patterns. The rhythmic
pattern is made up of a combination of
long, and short, sounds and silence.

When the steady beats and silence are
repeated over and over, a pattern called
ostinato is created.
