2. • Pick the location where you want your
pond
• Make sure location is where it gets sun
but not all the time, also make sure
your pond wont be under any large
trees
• Make sure you place your pond near a
deck or a patio, that way you can get the
most enjoyment from it.
3. • Determine how big you would like your
pond.
• It should be a size that doesn’t look to
overwhelming for your yard.
• Decide which shape you would like your
pond.
• Be creative, no two koi ponds have to
look alike.
4. • Lay your design out by using a garden
hose
• Once you have the desired shape made
with garden hose then take marking
paint and spray all the way around hose.
• Give it an undefined border for a more
natural appearance.
5. • Take a tape measure and get appropriate
measurements of your outline
• Go purchase correct size liner and filter
kit to do your project.
• Make sure filtration system is adequate
enough to keep your pond clean for the
depth you decide on.
6. • Start digging
• It is best to dig your pond by hand( with
a shovel)
• Dig in shelves, making each shelve deeper
each time.
• Make sure the base of your pond is at
least 18-24 inches deep.
7. • Make sure all sharp rocks are out of your
pond area.
• Remove anything that can puncture your
liner or make your underlayment not lay
smoothly.
• It is best to take a tamper and pack down
all your shelves to make sure all hard
rocks are gone and to ensure a smooth
liner.
• Make sure all your shelves are level that
way you don’t have a shallow side.
8. • Now you are ready to lay down your
underlayment.
• Stretch it out completely and make sure
it is pressed firmly against all shelf walls.
• After you have your underlayment all
laid out next you put your pond liner
over top of your underlayment.
• Smooth out all wrinkles starting from
your bottom shelf and working your way
to the top.
9. • Add rocks to the inside of the pond
• Place larger rocks on the outside edges of
the shelves
• Add smaller rocks and gravel to the open
spaces
• Don't completely fill in the bottom of
your liner mostly just line the edges.
10. • Install pump and filtratation
• Make sure your pump inlet is located on
the opposite side of the pond as the filter
outlet
• Add decorative underwater lights for a
dramatic effect
11. • Add water
• As u add water pull on the liner so to
smooth out any wrinkles that may be in it
• Allow water to circulate through the
filtration system for one week
• Once the week is up add your Koi and
enjoy the peacefulness of your new Koi
pond
